Booking the best rental experience:

When to book & When to go:

  • Book your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summertime is the most expensive season in the Nags Head area. Book your Nags Head vacation home in the Fall or Spring to enjoy gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Nags Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
  • Some property managers offer rate reductions for active duty military and veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your property manager to see if rate reductions are available for your family.
  • Booking websites often offer guests an option to purchase trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed trip time as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for details.
  • Often, rental management companies supply Nags Head area visitors guides which often include coupons, either offered directly by local companies, or through a relationship between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Nags Head visitors guide and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

Narrow your Search:

  • Select a group lead, choose your vacation week, and select a maximum budget.
  • Determine how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your family requires. Busy Being Fabulous:Oceanfront, private pool, hot tub, rec & theater room, elevator has 8 bedrooms and 10 bathrooms.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is generally available on booking websites. Otherwise, contact the property owner before booking the vacation home. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds.
  • If your group is traveling with pets, filter your search for a rental that allows animals. Get specifics on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Be aware that some property managers require additional pet deposits and fees.
  • Are you visiting for a single event or attraction? If so, use a map search to browse nearby rentals.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before booking.

Know before you go:

  • Take a copy of the property manager's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your .
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, intercom or washer/dryer. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief call prevents quite a few issues.
  • Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home while you are away, just like you would back home.
  • Record any damages to the property upon arrival, and immediately contact the property manager. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be helpful if there is a dispute.
  • Be respectful of your neighbors. Often times, nearby homes are filled by local residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before departing, walk through the rental property to reconfirm you've collected all belongings. Make sure to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • After your trip, leave feedback! Hosts rely on excellent ratings to compel future reservations. They'll be thankful for your review. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other vacationers will will be grateful for your experience find their best vacation home. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to fix it.

Ben Franklin

Stop by Nags Head's Ben Franklin at Mile Post 10 on the Bypass where you will find everything you need for the beach! From Clothing, T-shirts and Swimwear to Boards, Chairs, Umbrellas and Tackle. You'll find it all…and of course, we have the best selection of Souvenirs anywhere on the Outer Banks. Enjoy your vacation! Independently owned by a member of one of the Outer Banks’ oldest families, the Ben Franklin store is stocked with just about everything a visitor would need to go to the beach.

Ben Franklin stores were once part of a five-and-dime retail empire, with about 2,500 locations across the country in its heyday. As decades passed and the times and customers began to change, many closed their doors, leading to fewer than 150 of these nostalgic shops. Nags Head Ben Franklin, however, has withstood the test of time and adapted to the needs of its customers to provide a memorable shopping experience on the Outer Banks.

Debbie Terry Tolson, manager of the Ben Franklin location in Nags Head, recalls working with former owner Tommie Daniels. Daniels’ father, Moncie Daniels, started the business in downtown Manteo in the early 1900s. The Daniels family has been a longstanding fixture in the Outer Banks business community—Moncie even sold gas to the Wright brothers in 1903.

Tommie, with an excellent business mind, saw the opportunity the new Bypass presented and, in 1977, he opened the Nags Head location of Ben Franklin. He was one of the first businesses on the Bypass,” Tolson says.In addition to a new location, the Ben Franklin store saw a new group of customers.

“People would come from all around because Tommie had a little bit of everything—it was more like a five and 10 then,” Tolson explains. “As he went to the beach, he began to get more tourists, so he started catering more and more to visitors.”

Today, the 21,000-square-foot souvenir shop quickly catches the attention of anyone driving by thanks to the ocean-themed mural that decorates the façade of the building, painted by local artist Rob Snyder. This Ben Franklin location has become the must-stop shop for both first-time visitors to the area and generations of families who escape to the Outer Banks annually.

Tolson credits the great prices and friendly customer service to the success of the location, which keeps families returning.“People come in all the time and tell me, ‘my grandmother or my grandfather used to bring me here and now I’m bringing my children,’” she shares. “One of my favorite parts about working here is seeing the people come back year after year.”
