Nags Head vacation rental booking tips:

When to book & When to go:

  • Summertime is high season in the Nags Head area. Book your vacation in Spring or Fall to enjoy gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer.
  • In the Nags Head area, The sooner you can book a vacation rental, the easier your search will be. The most desirable properties are booked very early. Reserving your vacation rental six - twelve months before your travel dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and reserve your rental home.
  • Some hosts offer rate reductions for veterans. Ask your host or property manager if special offers are available for your group.
  • Booking websites often offer their guests an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for more information.
  • Often, management companies supply Nags Head area visitor guide magazines which include money-saving deals, either offered independently by local companies, or through a relationship with the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Nags Head area magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

Use filters to search efficiently:

  • Choose dates and budget.
  • Soundfront
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is regularly accessible on booking pages. If they are not listed, call the property management company before you reserve the home. Remember that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds and bunks. You'll need to work out what configuration is suitable for your vacation family.
  • If there's an individual Nags Head attraction you are crazy about, look for rentals that are either near by, or those that cater to your requirements.
  • Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Make certain to ask about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
  • Are you bringing the family pet? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Ask your property manager before booking, and study your agreement! Pet fees or could be applied to your agreement.

Know before you go:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before traveling. Take a printed copy, and save the instructions to your phone.
  • During check-in, record any issues with the property and immediately contact the property manager. Keep records of all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, intercom or washer/dryer. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief telephone call prevents many concerns.
  • Be respectful. Frequently, surrounding homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can usually help. Who better to ask where to charter a fishing boat, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Keep the property locked while you're out! Don't let burglars ruin your trip.
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, take a walk through the property to make sure you've collected all of your things. Check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Inspect the rental one final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever you can. If the property manager is not available, ensure that you take pictures of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your family have a excellent time? Many rental management companies make it easy for vacationers to provide feedback. If your rental and/or property management company was fantastic, they would love to hear it. If anything was wrong and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.

Don’t forget the gourmet market, or shop our beautiful linens for your bedroom and bath. We also feature coastal books and fine art, or just a whimsical fun gift to bring home to family and friends. Stop by soon and don’t forget to try our estate grown wines in our stores or visit our vineyard and winery, Sanctuary Vineyards, located adjacent to the original Cotton Gin in Jarvisburg.

Most know The Cotton Gin as a must-stop shop for fine gifts, beachwear, souvenirs and so much more, but this retailer has a long-standing history within the Outer Banks. A local landmark that holds almost a century of memories, The Cotton Gin started from humble beginnings and continues to adapt to the times and tourists. Tommy Wright’s family has been in the Outer Banks for nearly 200 years. His great-great grandfather, Jacob Francis Wright, shipwrecked in Duck back in the early 1800s. Calling these barrier islands his new home, Wright and his family acclimated to their new environment.

Adaptation is a common theme for the Wright family. Tommy and his wife Candace, who continue to steer The Cotton Gin, have seen not only their business change with the times, but the Outer Banks as a vacation destination as well. A farm market in Jarvisburg eventually transformed and flourished into several retail locations dotting the Outer Banks.

“As the area changed and tourism took off in the 1960s, the family saw people coming for vacations, so they began to grow vegetables and things developed from there,” says Tommy Wright. The Wright family expanded upon the farm market and began to remodel a working cotton gin, later transforming the gin into The Cotton Gin general store in the late 1960s. While the additions to the farm store drew visitors, it was their encounters with the Wright family that kept people coming back year after year, which is something that remains true today.
