Strategies for getting the perfect rental experience:

When to go & When to book:

  • Reserve your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer rental homes during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in the Nags Head area. To get the best value, change your vacation week to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer warmer temperatures, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Nags Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host whether your family qualifies for a discount.
  • Property managers typically offer their guests an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for specifics.
  • Look for your local Nags Head visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitor guide magazines have offers and deals for nearby accommodations, restaurants and tours.

Narrow your rental Search:

  • Choose a designated group leader, select your vacation dates, and choose a spending budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family requires. Fairway View: Dog-Friendly, Golf Course View has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed counts & types is almost always available on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, reach out to the property owner before booking your home. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds in living rooms. You'll need to determine what bed configuration is best for your vacation family.
  • Some properties allow pets, and others don't. Acceptable types of family pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and added costs may apply. Ask the property management company about pets before booking.
  • Are you visiting for a single attraction? Use a map search to locate nearby properties.
  • Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for persons with a disability. .

Additional considerations:

  • We recommend storing the owner's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, intercom or coffee maker. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief call prevents a lot of difficulties.
  • Lock your rental property while you're gone! Don't let crooks spoil your family vacation.
  • Note any damages to the property upon arrival, and immediately e-mail them to the host. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be beneficial if damages are assessed.
  • Be respectful. Frequently, nearby homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can often help. Who better to ask where to grab the best tacos, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • When it's time to leave, take a walk-through to confirm you didn't leave anything behind. Make sure to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Did you have a terrific stay? Most rental websites make it easy for customers to provide comments. If your property and/or host was wonderful, they would love to hear it. If anything was out of order and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
