Tips and Tricks to get the optimal Nags Head vacation property experience:

Finding your best deal:

  • In the Nags Head area, The sooner your group can reserve a vacation home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable properties are booked very early. Booking your rental property 6-12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to plan and reserve your rental property.
  • Reserve your Nags Head rental in Spring or Fall to enjoy gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer months.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a price reduction.
  • Booking websites frequently offer customers an option to purchase trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for specifics.
  • Look for your local Nags Head visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitor guide magazines contain money saving offers on nearby tours, shops, and attractions.

Narrow your Search:

  • Start by choosing a vacation week and a maximum budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and the bed configuration your family requires. Hawk's Nest: Semi-Oceanfront, Hot Tub, Close to Beach Access has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is generally accessible online. If you don't see them listed, reach out to the host before reserving the home. Note that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
  • Some rentals allow pets, but others do not. Acceptable types of pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional fees may apply. Ask the property management company about pet restrictions before booking.
  • Is your family looking for specific amenities? Most rental websites include search filters for amenities.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. .

Tips for a great stay:

  • Get the host's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your rental.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, elevator or washer/dryer. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent quite a few difficulties.
  • Keep the property locked while you are out! Don't let thieves spoil your trip.
  • At Check-in, note any issues with the property and immediately alert the host. Record all coorespondence.
  • Respect your neighbors. Often times, nearby homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Locals can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to spend a rainy day, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, take a walk through the rental to make sure you've collected all belongings. Check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Go through the rental one final time and scan for damages to contents or the property itself. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host isn't available, remember to take photos of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did you have a excellent vacation? Most rental management companies make it easy for travelers to provide feedback. If your rental and/or host was wonderful, they would love to hear about it. If anything was out of order and they failed to fix it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.

Don’t forget the gourmet market, or shop our beautiful linens for your bedroom and bath. We also feature coastal books and fine art, or just a whimsical fun gift to bring home to family and friends. Stop by soon and don’t forget to try our estate grown wines in our stores or visit our vineyard and winery, Sanctuary Vineyards, located adjacent to the original Cotton Gin in Jarvisburg.

Most know The Cotton Gin as a must-stop shop for fine gifts, beachwear, souvenirs and so much more, but this retailer has a long-standing history within the Outer Banks. A local landmark that holds almost a century of memories, The Cotton Gin started from humble beginnings and continues to adapt to the times and tourists. Tommy Wright’s family has been in the Outer Banks for nearly 200 years. His great-great grandfather, Jacob Francis Wright, shipwrecked in Duck back in the early 1800s. Calling these barrier islands his new home, Wright and his family acclimated to their new environment.

Adaptation is a common theme for the Wright family. Tommy and his wife Candace, who continue to steer The Cotton Gin, have seen not only their business change with the times, but the Outer Banks as a vacation destination as well. A farm market in Jarvisburg eventually transformed and flourished into several retail locations dotting the Outer Banks.

“As the area changed and tourism took off in the 1960s, the family saw people coming for vacations, so they began to grow vegetables and things developed from there,” says Tommy Wright. The Wright family expanded upon the farm market and began to remodel a working cotton gin, later transforming the gin into The Cotton Gin general store in the late 1960s. While the additions to the farm store drew visitors, it was their encounters with the Wright family that kept people coming back year after year, which is something that remains true today.
