Tricks and tips to get the very best vacation property experience:

When to go & When to reserve a rental home:

  • To get the best rental home within your budget, we strongly suggest reserving in the Fall or Spring. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, greater selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of giant crowds at the beach and popular Nags Head attractions. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer months.
  • Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer rental homes during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host if your vacationing group qualifies for a price reduction.
  • Property management companies often offer their guests an option to purchase vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost you anywhere between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed trip time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
  • Find a copy of your local Nags Head visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great articles, visitors guide magazines contain money saving offers on nearby accommodations and attractions.

Finding the perfect vacation home in the Nags Head area:

  • First and foremost, have your family choose a vacation week and a maximum budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration your group needs. Waves for Days: Oceanfront Condo w\/ Pool Access has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Precise details about bedrooms and bed types is commonly available on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, email or call the property owner before reserving the vacation home. Remember that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which frequently includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You'll need to determine what configuration is suitable for your trip.
  • Visiting for a specific event or attraction? Try a map search to browse nearby properties.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. .
  • Traveling with pets? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Ask your property manager before booking, and study your rental agreement! Additional pet fees or applied to your contract.

During your stay:

  • Store the owner's contact information in your smartphone.
  • Upon arrival, record any issues with the rental property and immediately contact the host. Keep records of all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, elevator or appliance. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents quite a few difficulties.
  • Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You'll enhance your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors can be a great resource to find the best local attractions.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to order the best nachos, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Lock your rental home while you are out. Protect the owner's property and your stuff!
  • Re-check the property to make sure that you've packed all of your family's items on check-out day. Make sure to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Walk through the property one final time and scan for damages to contents or the property itself. We advise walking through with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host is not available, ensure that you take pictures of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Remember to leave feedback! Hosts rely on great reviews to stimulate new reservations. They'll be much obliged for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other vacationing families will be thankful you shared your review and help them have the best future vacation. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to fix it.

Ben Franklin

Stop by Nags Head's Ben Franklin at Mile Post 10 on the Bypass where you will find everything you need for the beach! From Clothing, T-shirts and Swimwear to Boards, Chairs, Umbrellas and Tackle. You'll find it all…and of course, we have the best selection of Souvenirs anywhere on the Outer Banks. Enjoy your vacation! Independently owned by a member of one of the Outer Banks’ oldest families, the Ben Franklin store is stocked with just about everything a visitor would need to go to the beach.

Ben Franklin stores were once part of a five-and-dime retail empire, with about 2,500 locations across the country in its heyday. As decades passed and the times and customers began to change, many closed their doors, leading to fewer than 150 of these nostalgic shops. Nags Head Ben Franklin, however, has withstood the test of time and adapted to the needs of its customers to provide a memorable shopping experience on the Outer Banks.

Debbie Terry Tolson, manager of the Ben Franklin location in Nags Head, recalls working with former owner Tommie Daniels. Daniels’ father, Moncie Daniels, started the business in downtown Manteo in the early 1900s. The Daniels family has been a longstanding fixture in the Outer Banks business community—Moncie even sold gas to the Wright brothers in 1903.

Tommie, with an excellent business mind, saw the opportunity the new Bypass presented and, in 1977, he opened the Nags Head location of Ben Franklin. He was one of the first businesses on the Bypass,” Tolson says.In addition to a new location, the Ben Franklin store saw a new group of customers.

“People would come from all around because Tommie had a little bit of everything—it was more like a five and 10 then,” Tolson explains. “As he went to the beach, he began to get more tourists, so he started catering more and more to visitors.”

Today, the 21,000-square-foot souvenir shop quickly catches the attention of anyone driving by thanks to the ocean-themed mural that decorates the façade of the building, painted by local artist Rob Snyder. This Ben Franklin location has become the must-stop shop for both first-time visitors to the area and generations of families who escape to the Outer Banks annually.

Tolson credits the great prices and friendly customer service to the success of the location, which keeps families returning.“People come in all the time and tell me, ‘my grandmother or my grandfather used to bring me here and now I’m bringing my children,’” she shares. “One of my favorite parts about working here is seeing the people come back year after year.”
