Tips to get the optimal Nags Head vacation home experience:

How to get the best rental home value:

  • Summer is the most expensive season along the coast of NC. To get the best value, change your group's vacation to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer warm weather, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic.
  • The earlier you can book a vacation rental, the better your selection will be. The best rental properties are reserved very early. Booking your rental home six to twelve months before your travel dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to plan and reserve your vacation rental.
  • Some property management companies offer rate reductions for veterans and active duty military. Remember to ask your property manager if special offers are available for your family.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners often offer their guests an option to purchase trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any days missed as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
  • Often, rental management companies and vacation rental houses supply Nags Head area visitor guides which often include coupons, either offered independently by local businesses, or by way of a partnership between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Nags Head area magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

Make a plan and pick the perfectrental:

  • First and foremost, have your family decide on date ranges and a max budget.
  • Note the number beds and the configuration your family requires. Surround Sound: Sound View, Shared Pool, Balcony has 2 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rental home search.
  • Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed counts is almost always available on booking websites. If they are not listed, reach out to the property owner before you reserve the home. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds in living rooms.
  • Does your group require specific amenities? Most websites include amenity lists and search filters.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. .
  • If your group is traveling with pets, you'll need to search for a pet-friendly property. Get details on breed, weight, and type requirements. Be aware that some hosts charge pet deposits and fees.

More tips for your stay:

  • Be sure you get the property manager's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental.
  • To ensure that damages aren't linked to your stay, note any problem areas upon your arrival. Get in touch with the rental manager right away to document your findings. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having the recorded issues and contact attempts will be valuable.
  • Property managers are available to help! Feel free to ask any questions during your stay.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disrespectful visitors bothering your life at home. Apply the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great local food and attractions you would've never otherwise known about!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Neighbors can usually help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to launch your kayaks, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Lock your rental property while you're out! Don't let thieves spoil your vacation.
  • Re-check every room of the property to confirm that you've packed all of your family's items on check-out day. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Did you have a great time? Most rental websites make it easy for customers to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or host was great, they would love to hear about it. If anything was defective and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.

Ben Franklin

Stop by Nags Head's Ben Franklin at Mile Post 10 on the Bypass where you will find everything you need for the beach! From Clothing, T-shirts and Swimwear to Boards, Chairs, Umbrellas and Tackle. You'll find it all…and of course, we have the best selection of Souvenirs anywhere on the Outer Banks. Enjoy your vacation! Independently owned by a member of one of the Outer Banks’ oldest families, the Ben Franklin store is stocked with just about everything a visitor would need to go to the beach.

Ben Franklin stores were once part of a five-and-dime retail empire, with about 2,500 locations across the country in its heyday. As decades passed and the times and customers began to change, many closed their doors, leading to fewer than 150 of these nostalgic shops. Nags Head Ben Franklin, however, has withstood the test of time and adapted to the needs of its customers to provide a memorable shopping experience on the Outer Banks.

Debbie Terry Tolson, manager of the Ben Franklin location in Nags Head, recalls working with former owner Tommie Daniels. Daniels’ father, Moncie Daniels, started the business in downtown Manteo in the early 1900s. The Daniels family has been a longstanding fixture in the Outer Banks business community—Moncie even sold gas to the Wright brothers in 1903.

Tommie, with an excellent business mind, saw the opportunity the new Bypass presented and, in 1977, he opened the Nags Head location of Ben Franklin. He was one of the first businesses on the Bypass,” Tolson says.In addition to a new location, the Ben Franklin store saw a new group of customers.

“People would come from all around because Tommie had a little bit of everything—it was more like a five and 10 then,” Tolson explains. “As he went to the beach, he began to get more tourists, so he started catering more and more to visitors.”

Today, the 21,000-square-foot souvenir shop quickly catches the attention of anyone driving by thanks to the ocean-themed mural that decorates the façade of the building, painted by local artist Rob Snyder. This Ben Franklin location has become the must-stop shop for both first-time visitors to the area and generations of families who escape to the Outer Banks annually.

Tolson credits the great prices and friendly customer service to the success of the location, which keeps families returning.“People come in all the time and tell me, ‘my grandmother or my grandfather used to bring me here and now I’m bringing my children,’” she shares. “One of my favorite parts about working here is seeing the people come back year after year.”
