Booking the best vacation property experience:
Getting the most from your spending budget:
- Summer is high season in the Nags Head area. Booking your vacation rental in the Fall or Spring is a good way to save money on your vacation. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of suitable homes.
- Reserve your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups book their Summer rental homes during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Some hosts offer special rates for veterans. Ask your host or property manager if special offers are available for your group.
- Property managers typically offer renters an option to purchase vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for details.
- Find a copy of your local visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, travel guides contain coupons for local accommodations and attractions.
How to pick the perfect vacation rental:
- Start by choosing your trip dates and a budget.
- Private Pool, Hot Tub
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is usually available on booking pages. If they are not listed, email or call the property management company before you book the rental. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which typically includes pull out couches in living rooms.
- Does your group require particular amenities? Most rental websites include search filters for amenities. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find your ideal rental home.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. .
- If your family is bringing pets, search for a rental that allows animals. Ask for details on breed, size, and type requirements. Note that some hosts charge additional pet fees.
During your stay:
- Get the owner's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your rental home. Store the manager's information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Document any issues with the property during check in, and immediately e-mail them to the host. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be helpful if a dispute is filed.
- Property managers are there to help! Feel free to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Be a good neighbor. Often, nearby homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
- Keep your rental home locked while you are gone! Don't let crooks ruin your holiday.
- Just before checking out, take a final walk-through to make sure you have not forget any personal items. Remember to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the property one final time and scan for damages to contents or the property itself. We suggest walking through with the host whenever you can. If the manager is not available, remember to take photographs of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your family have a wonderful vacation? Many rental home management companies make it easy for vacationers to provide reviews. If your property and/or host was wonderful, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was imperfect and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
