Strategies for getting the best vacation property experience:

How to get the best value:

  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months along the coast of NC. Booking your vacation home in the Spring or Fall is our favorite way to save money on your rental home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of acceptable homes. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Nags Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with loved ones at the beach.
  • Reserve your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer vacation rentals during Winter holiday get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Property managers sometimes offer promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. Make sure to check with your host or property manager to see if special offers are available for your family before you book.
  • Property managers usually offer their guests an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed trip time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for details.
  • Look for your local Nags Head area magazine upon arrival. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, travel guide magazines have money saving offers on local accommodations, tours and attractions.

How to pick the best rental:

  • Start by choosing the best vacation week and a max budget.
  • Sleeps 10 has 5 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
  • Precise information about bedrooms and bed counts is commonly available on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, contact the host before booking your home. Note that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds in living rooms.
  • If there's an individual Nags Head destination you love, browse properties that are either nearby, or those that cater especially to your desires.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for persons with a disability. Make certain to ask about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
  • Some rentals allow pets, but others do not. Acceptable types of dog or cat, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added costs may apply. Ask the property management company about your furry family members before booking.

Tips to have a terrific stay:

  • Store the host's contact information in your smartphone.
  • Make a record of any damages to the rental upon arrival, and immediately contact the property manager. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are useful if damages are attributed to your stay.
  • Property managers are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Be respectful of your neighbors. Often times, surrounding homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking policies is the right thing to do.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can often help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Lock your rental home while you're out. Keep your property safe!
  • Double-check every room of the rental property to confirm that you've packed all of your family's items at departure. Make sure to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Walk through the rental a final time and scan for any damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the manager isn't available, take photographs of the rental to record its condition.
  • After your trip, leave a review! Hosts rely on good ratings to inspire new bookings. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something went awry, other vacationing families will appreciate that you share your feedback and help them have the best future vacation. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to solve it.
