How to get the best rental home experience:

Getting the most from your rental budget:

  • Summer is the most expensive season along the coast of NC. To find the best value, consider changing your family's Nags Head trip dates to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and October offer excellent weather, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic.
  • Book your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families reserve their Summer rental homes during holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Property managers sometimes offer discounts for veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your property manager to see if special offers are available for your group.
  • Property management companies frequently offer renters an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for more information.
  • Often, property management companies supply Nags Head area visitor guide magazines that include coupons, either offered independently by local businesses, or through a relationship with the management company and the business itself. You can also find Nags Head visitors guide and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

Choosing and booking the bestvacation home:

  • To start, have your group decide on the best dates and a max budget.
  • Decide how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group needs. 6119 Gone Coastal * Oceanfront * Pool * Sauna has 8 bedrooms and 9 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Nags Head rentals search.
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is almost always available online. If they are not listed, reach out to the property management company before booking your home. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which frequently includes pull-out couches.
  • If there's a particular Nags Head attraction you long to visit, keep an eye out for properties that are either near by, or those that cater especially to your desires.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. Make certain to ask about wheel chair entry, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
  • If your family is bringing pets, you must book a pet-friendly rental. Request information on breed, size, and type requirements. Usually, property managers require additional pet deposits and fees.

Tips for a fantastic stay:

  • Be sure you get the property manager's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your . Put the host's information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • To make sure that damages are not attributed to your visit, inspect for any problem areas when you arrive. E-mail the property manager right away to report your findings. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having a record of problems and contact attempts will be valuable.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, intercom or thermostat. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents a lot of concerns.
  • Be respectful. Often times, adjacent homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking rules reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can often help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to order the best nachos, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
  • Lock your vacation home while you're out and about. Protect your property!
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before departing, walk through the rental to reconfirm you've collected all personal items. Remember to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the rental a final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the property manager isn't available, take photographs of the rental to record its condition.
  • Did you have a fantastic time? Most rental home management companies make it easy for customers to provide feedback. If your rental and/or property management company was great, they would love to hear about it. If anything was wrong and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.

Ben Franklin

Stop by Nags Head's Ben Franklin at Mile Post 10 on the Bypass where you will find everything you need for the beach! From Clothing, T-shirts and Swimwear to Boards, Chairs, Umbrellas and Tackle. You'll find it all…and of course, we have the best selection of Souvenirs anywhere on the Outer Banks. Enjoy your vacation! Independently owned by a member of one of the Outer Banks’ oldest families, the Ben Franklin store is stocked with just about everything a visitor would need to go to the beach.

Ben Franklin stores were once part of a five-and-dime retail empire, with about 2,500 locations across the country in its heyday. As decades passed and the times and customers began to change, many closed their doors, leading to fewer than 150 of these nostalgic shops. Nags Head Ben Franklin, however, has withstood the test of time and adapted to the needs of its customers to provide a memorable shopping experience on the Outer Banks.

Debbie Terry Tolson, manager of the Ben Franklin location in Nags Head, recalls working with former owner Tommie Daniels. Daniels’ father, Moncie Daniels, started the business in downtown Manteo in the early 1900s. The Daniels family has been a longstanding fixture in the Outer Banks business community—Moncie even sold gas to the Wright brothers in 1903.

Tommie, with an excellent business mind, saw the opportunity the new Bypass presented and, in 1977, he opened the Nags Head location of Ben Franklin. He was one of the first businesses on the Bypass,” Tolson says.In addition to a new location, the Ben Franklin store saw a new group of customers.

“People would come from all around because Tommie had a little bit of everything—it was more like a five and 10 then,” Tolson explains. “As he went to the beach, he began to get more tourists, so he started catering more and more to visitors.”

Today, the 21,000-square-foot souvenir shop quickly catches the attention of anyone driving by thanks to the ocean-themed mural that decorates the façade of the building, painted by local artist Rob Snyder. This Ben Franklin location has become the must-stop shop for both first-time visitors to the area and generations of families who escape to the Outer Banks annually.

Tolson credits the great prices and friendly customer service to the success of the location, which keeps families returning.“People come in all the time and tell me, ‘my grandmother or my grandfather used to bring me here and now I’m bringing my children,’” she shares. “One of my favorite parts about working here is seeing the people come back year after year.”
