Finding the best rental home experience:

Find your perfect vacation home:

  • Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually open a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacation rentals during Winter holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summer months are the most expensive season in Nags Head. To get the largest rental home for your budget, we suggest booking in Fall or Spring months. You'll benefit from lower rates, better selection, warm weather and the absence of large crowds at your favorite Nags Head restaurants and activities. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Nags Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner whether your family qualifies for a special rate.
  • Property management companies often offer renters an option to obtain vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally will cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for additional information.
  • Find a copy of your local Nags Head visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great articles, travel guides have discounts for nearby shops and restaurants.

How to choose the best rental in the Nags Head area:

  • Start by selecting potential vacation weeks and a max budget.
  • Sleeps 12 has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
  • Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is almost always accessible on booking pages. Otherwise, call the host before booking the vacation home. Note that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You'll need to establish which bed configuration is right for your group.
  • Some rentals allow pets, but some don't. Acceptable types of family pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional costs may apply. Ask the owner about pets before booking.
  • Visiting for a single event or attraction? If so, use a map search to locate nearby rentals.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. .

More considerations:

  • We recommend storing the manager's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, stereo or washer/dryer. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents many difficulties.
  • Protect the owner (and your stuff!) by locking the rental while you are out, just like you would at home.
  • At Check-in, make note of any damages to the property and immediately alert the owner. Keep records of all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
  • Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. You will magnify your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are usually an incredible source for finding the best local spots.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can frequently point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to launch your kayaks, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • On check-out day, complete a final walk-through to make sure you haven't forget anything. Remember to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Walk through the property one final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We recommend inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host isn't available, ensure that you take photos and video of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • After your trip, leave a review! Hosts rely on good ratings to compel new reservations. They'll be grateful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other vacationers will will be grateful for your feedback find their best vacation rental. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to solve it.

Visitors are treated to a unique shopping experience in our main store in Jarvisburg, as well as our beach stores in Corolla, Duck, and Nags Head. Explore room after room filled with décor for your home and coastal fashions for both men and women. Don’t forget the gourmet market, or shop our beautiful linens for your bedroom and bath. We also feature coastal books and fine art, or just a whimsical fun gift to bring home to family and friends. Stop by soon and don’t forget to try our estate grown wines in our stores or visit our vineyard and winery, Sanctuary Vineyards, located adjacent to the original Cotton Gin in Jarvisburg.

Most know The Cotton Gin as a must-stop shop for fine gifts, beachwear, souvenirs and so much more, but this retailer has a long-standing history within the Outer Banks. A local landmark that holds almost a century of memories, The Cotton Gin started from humble beginnings and continues to adapt to the times and tourists. Tommy Wright’s family has been in the Outer Banks for nearly 200 years. His great-great grandfather, Jacob Francis Wright, shipwrecked in Duck back in the early 1800s. Calling these barrier islands his new home, Wright and his family acclimated to their new environment.

Adaptation is a common theme for the Wright family. Tommy and his wife Candace, who continue to steer The Cotton Gin, have seen not only their business change with the times, but the Outer Banks as a vacation destination as well. A farm market in Jarvisburg eventually transformed and flourished into several retail locations dotting the Outer Banks.

“As the area changed and tourism took off in the 1960s, the family saw people coming for vacations, so they began to grow vegetables and things developed from there,” says Tommy Wright. The Wright family expanded upon the farm market and began to remodel a working cotton gin, later transforming the gin into The Cotton Gin general store in the late 1960s. While the additions to the farm store drew visitors, it was their encounters with the Wright family that kept people coming back year after year, which is something that remains true today.
