Want a taste of old Nags Head? 'The Beach House' is a historical treasure on the Nags Head oceanfront with an added private pool and hot tub! The pool area has great ocean vistas. The Beach House has the tallest ocean front observation/sunbathing tower on the Outer Banks with a 360 degree view of the ocean, the sound, and Jockey's Ridge. At nighttime you will be able to catch a glimpse of the light from Bodie Island lighthouse. This property is over 100 years old, and dates back to the days the inland farmers would bring their families to the beach to escape the heat and deadly mosquitoes for beach breezes all summer long! After generations with the same family, it was purchased by owners that respected the history of the property and wanted to add their own touch with the whimsical and fun decor theme of roosters and chickens. If you are interested in a unique destination filled with rich history this is the spot for you. Floor, walls and ceiling is original tongue in groove planking that has been restored and refinished. You can see the original nails from the sanding of the floor planks.

Central heat and air throughout the property has been added and the kitchen and bathrooms completely redone with granite, new fixtures, farm sink, and washer and dryer. LCD TV's throughout the property. The bunk room on the west side does have an additional window unit for those additional hot days just in case. There is a separate room off the back-deck original to the property, now for a study work area with computer and desk, plus there is wireless internet access throughout property and study. Located between Jockey's Ridge and the Atlantic Ocean, you can see Jockey's Ridge from the property. What a great location to base active families on the go! Hang gliding, climbing Jockey's Ridge, kite flying, playing in the ocean, sunbathing or appreciating the private pool and hot tub are available with simple access. There is a shared dune top gazebo beach access you share with only 2 modest semi oceanfront apartments next to the property. The pool and hot tub are your private amenities. Eateries, shopping, seafood and farm market are within walking distance. Close to family activities including water sports, go carts, putt-putt, and a sound side park and theater for outdoor movies on the lawn.

Appreciate the remarkable expansive vistas from the 51 ft observation/sunbathing tower! On the lower deck there will be a couch, two chairs, and a coffee table with outdoor carpet. This is a ideal play area for modest kids. Entry from the first deck to the higher decks will be controlled by a high "pool-like" gate. Entry from the home to the tower will be controlled with a security code preventing unwanted access. On the second level of the deck there will be 4 comfortable chairs to savor the view. On the third level of the deck you will be able to appreciate the breeze from the swing facing the ocean. The top level is where you will be able to see expansive vistas of the ocean, Jockey's Ridge, the light from Bodie Island Lighthouse at nighttime, and extraordinary vistas of the sunset! There will be chaise loungers for sunbathing too! The tower will have motion-activated solar lighting for all stairwells up to the top for painless viewing at nighttime.

This property is more than 800 feet from a public beach access, giving you a more secluded feel.

Tips and Tricks to get the perfect Nags Head vacation property experience:

Cost saving strategies:

  • In the Nags Head area, The sooner you can book a vacation home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable properties are booked early. Booking your vacation property six to twelve months before your travel dates is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to plan and book your rental home.
  • To get the most suitable vacation home for your budget, we suggest booking in the Spring or Fall. You'll benefit from lower rental rates, greater selection, beautiful weather and the absence of large crowds at your favorite restaurants and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during June, July, and August.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host whether your family qualifies for a discount.
  • Property managers usually offer customers an option to obtain trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which usually will cost between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for specifics.
  • Many management companies and vacation rental houses supply Nags Head area travel guide magazines that include special deals, either offered directly by local businesses, or by way of a relationship with the management company and the business itself. You can also find Nags Head visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

Selecting and booking a perfect Nags Head vacation home:

  • To start, have your family choose a vacation week and a spending budget.
  • Oceanfront
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is generally accessible online. If you don't see them listed, email or call the property management company before you reserve the home. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
  • Are you bringing the family pet? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Remember to ask your host before booking, and study your rental agreement! Extra fees or costs applied to your invoice.
  • If there's a certain Nags Head destination you long to visit, look for homes that are either nearby, or those that cater especially to your requirements.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before reserving a rental.

More tips for your visit:

  • We recommend storing the host's contact information in your smartphone.
  • Property managers are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
  • Protect the property owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are gone, just like you would back home.
  • To make sure that no damages are attributed to your family's stay, inspect the rental for any problem areas upon check in. Speak to the rental manager right away to report any damages. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having the recorded problems and contact attempts will be helpful.
  • Respect your neighbors. Frequently, adjacent homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking rules reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can usually help. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • When it's time to leave, take a final walk-through to make sure you have not forget any personal items. Make sure to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Walk through the rental a final time and keep an eye out for damage. We advise inspecting the property with the property manager whenever possible. If the host isn't available, remember to take photos of the rental to record its condition.
  • Did your group have a excellent stay? Many rental home management companies make it easy for vacationers to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or property management company was great, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was inoperable and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.

Brew Thru

No trip to the Outer Banks is complete without cruising through Brew Thru, the Outer Banks’ original drive thru convenience store. Whether you’re looking for a refreshing cold beverage of Coke, Pepsi and other soft drinks on the go, stocking up your cooler with refreshments to enjoy at the beach or piling up on beer and wine for a party, Brew Thru is a fun and unique experience all vacationers need to see for themselves.

Drive-Through Beer & Gear

Brew Thru is Your One-Stop Shop at the Beach

The year was 1977, and Dana and Becky Lawrentz were chatting with friends over brews in their hometown of Akron, Ohio. They got to talking about a gas station convenience store in the area that had built a makeshift drive-through. Everyone agreed it would be pretty great if you could actually drive through a convenience store and pick up everything you needed without getting out of the car. But what would you call a place like that?

Well, you’d call it a Brew Thru.

It was an idea they couldn’t shake, so the Lawrentzes moved to the Outer Banks and built the first Brew Thru with the help of a partner. The idea was that people could come buy everything they would need for their trip to the beach—beer, wine, soft drinks, snacks, ice—without getting out of the car. That same year, a t-shirt salesman visiting the store and talked them into adding t-shirts to their product line—and 44 years later there are now more than five million Brew Thru t-shirts out in the wild.

The Lawrentzes’ daughter Brandy and her husband Philip Foreman purchased the business from them in 2002, and they now operate five locations across the Outer Banks.“We love being the one-stop shop for folks on the way to their beach house,” Foreman says. “Our car tenders are the friendliest people at the beach. We’re here to greet you, get you everything you need for your trip, load it up in the trunk for you, and have you leaving with a smile on your face.”

The store is quite expansive, featuring more than 100 brands of beer, dozens of wines and even a vast selection of cigars—not to mention all the snacks, t-shirts and other gear. To make ordering a little easier, customers in line get a menu—fondly known as the Summer-y—that outlines everything available at the store. These Summer-ies are also available in many of the beach rentals, which allows vacationers to decide what they want before driving through.

For customers who would like to get out and stretch their legs, there’s the Brew Thru Shop in Kill Devil Hills, where you can find their world famous t-shirts and other gifts. New t-shirt designs are created each year, making a yearly Brew Thru t-shirt a favorite of locals and annual visitors to the Outer Banks.

The Foremans both grew up in the Outer Banks, and they love that Brandy’s parents’ vision for a friendly and convenient place for people to grab their brews and other beach stay essentials is continuing to flourish.

“Our family has been welcoming people to the Outer Banks since 1977,” Foreman says. “We love this beautiful place, and we want everybody to get to enjoy it.”
