Tips to get the best Nags Head vacation home experience:

How to get the best rental value:

  • To get the best value, try shifting your family's Nags Head vacation dates to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and even October offer great weather, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Nags Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
  • The earlier you can book, the easier your search will be. The best vacation homes are booked early. Reserving your rental home six - twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to search for and book your rental.
  • Some property managers offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Ask your property manager if rate reductions are available for your family before you book.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners often offer renters an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which usually will cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for days missed as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for additional information.
  • Look for your local visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitors guides contain offers and deals for nearby accommodations, restaurants and tours.

Use filters to narrow your rental search:

  • Choose your dates and spending budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group needs. Lost On Lost Colony has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our search.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is often accessible online. If they are not listed, email or call the property owner before you book your home. Note that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds in living rooms.
  • Is your family looking for particular amenities? Most rental websites include search filters with amenity lists.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. .
  • Some rental properties allow pets, but some do not. Allowable types of family pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional fees may apply. Ask the owner about allowable pet guidelines before booking.

More considerations:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before traveling. Save the instructions to your phone, and take a printed copy.
  • Make a record of any damages to the rental during check in, and immediately send them to the host. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be very helpful if damages are assessed.
  • Property managers are available to help! Feel free to ask any questions during your stay.
  • Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Often, nearby homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Locals can usually help. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for BBQ?
  • Protect the owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are gone, just like you would at home.
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, walk through the rental to make sure you've collected everything. Check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Leave a review! Property owners rely on good feedback to inspire new reservations. They'll be much obliged for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other vacationers will appreciate that you share your review find their best vacation rental. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to remedy it.
