Strategies to get the best vacation rental experience:
How to get the best rental home value:
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months in coastal NC. Booking your vacation rental in Fall or Spring months is one of our best tips for saving money on your rental home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of acceptable properties. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the high season.
- Reserve your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families reserve their Summer rental homes during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Property managers sometimes offer promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. Remember to ask your host or property manager if special discounts are available for your family.
- Property managers typically offer customers an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed trip time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for additional information.
- Find a copy of your local Nags Head area magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, travel guide magazines have offers and deals for nearby tours, shops, and attractions.
Make a plan and choose yourrental home:
- Choose your dates and budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. Stella Maris
- Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts is commonly available on booking pages. If they are not listed, email the property owner before you book the home. Note that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull out couches in living rooms.
- If there's a particular Nags Head beach you crave, search for homes that are either nearby, or those that cater to your needs.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before reserving a rental.
- Remember to include your furry companions! Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Remember to ask your host before booking, and study your rental agreement! Extra fees or costs might be applied to your invoice.
Additional considerations:
- Add the owner's information to your phone. Understand and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
- Upon arrival, note any damages to the rental property and immediately contact the property manager. Record all coorespondence.
- Hosts are there to help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
- Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You will enhance your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are usually a fantastic resource to find the best local attractions.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Neighbors can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the fresh catch of the day, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Lock your rental home while you are out. Keep your property safe!
- On check-out day, complete a walk-through to make sure you did not leave anything behind. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Inspect the property a final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager isn't available, take video and pictures of the property to record its condition.
- Did you have a great vacation? Many rental managers make it easy for guests to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or property manager was fantastic, they would love to hear about it. If anything was defective and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
