Getting the best Nags Head rental experience:

Sticking to a budget:

  • To get the largest vacation home for your budget, we suggest reserving in Fall or Spring. You'll benefit from lower rates, better selection, beautiful weather and the absence of large crowds at popular attractions and restaurants.
  • Reserve your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually become available a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups book their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Property management companies sometimes offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. Make sure to check with your host or property manager to see if discounts are available for your group.
  • Property management companies often offer their guests an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for additional information.
  • Find a copy of your local Nags Head area magazine upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great articles, visitors guide magazines contain discounts for nearby tours, shops, and attractions.

Use filters to search efficiently:

  • To start, have your family agree to trip dates and a maximum budget.
  • Determine how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. Peer Paradise: Oceanfront, Private Pool & Hot Tub has 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is generally accessible on booking websites. If they are not listed, email the property owner before booking the vacation home. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds. You will need to determine what is suitable for your vacation group.
  • If there's an individual Nags Head attraction you crave, keep an eye out for rentals that are either near by, or those that cater to your requirements.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Remember to confirm all required amenities are included before reserving a rental
  • Some rental properties allow pets, but some don't. Allowable types of pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional costs may apply. Ask the property manager about allowable pet guidelines before booking.

Advice for a fantastic stay:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before traveling. Save the directions to your phone, and take a printed backup.
  • To make sure damages are not attributed to your family's stay, note any problem areas upon your arrival. message the property manager immediately to report any damages. If there is a dispute, having a record of issues and contact attempts will be valuable.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, stereo or washer/dryer. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents many concerns.
  • Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You will enhance your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are an excellent resource to find the best local scenic spots.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Local residents can often help. Who better to ask where to charter a fishing boat, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Lock your rental property while you are away! Don't let crooks ruin your vacation.
  • Re-check the vacation property to make sure that you've packed everything at check-out. Re-check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Inspect the property one final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the property manager isn't available, take video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did you have a terrific time? Most rental home management companies make it easy for guests to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or property management company was wonderful, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was wrong and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.

Ben Franklin

Stop by Nags Head's Ben Franklin at Mile Post 10 on the Bypass where you will find everything you need for the beach! From Clothing, T-shirts and Swimwear to Boards, Chairs, Umbrellas and Tackle. You'll find it all…and of course, we have the best selection of Souvenirs anywhere on the Outer Banks. Enjoy your vacation! Independently owned by a member of one of the Outer Banks’ oldest families, the Ben Franklin store is stocked with just about everything a visitor would need to go to the beach.

Ben Franklin stores were once part of a five-and-dime retail empire, with about 2,500 locations across the country in its heyday. As decades passed and the times and customers began to change, many closed their doors, leading to fewer than 150 of these nostalgic shops. Nags Head Ben Franklin, however, has withstood the test of time and adapted to the needs of its customers to provide a memorable shopping experience on the Outer Banks.

Debbie Terry Tolson, manager of the Ben Franklin location in Nags Head, recalls working with former owner Tommie Daniels. Daniels’ father, Moncie Daniels, started the business in downtown Manteo in the early 1900s. The Daniels family has been a longstanding fixture in the Outer Banks business community—Moncie even sold gas to the Wright brothers in 1903.

Tommie, with an excellent business mind, saw the opportunity the new Bypass presented and, in 1977, he opened the Nags Head location of Ben Franklin. He was one of the first businesses on the Bypass,” Tolson says.In addition to a new location, the Ben Franklin store saw a new group of customers.

“People would come from all around because Tommie had a little bit of everything—it was more like a five and 10 then,” Tolson explains. “As he went to the beach, he began to get more tourists, so he started catering more and more to visitors.”

Today, the 21,000-square-foot souvenir shop quickly catches the attention of anyone driving by thanks to the ocean-themed mural that decorates the façade of the building, painted by local artist Rob Snyder. This Ben Franklin location has become the must-stop shop for both first-time visitors to the area and generations of families who escape to the Outer Banks annually.

Tolson credits the great prices and friendly customer service to the success of the location, which keeps families returning.“People come in all the time and tell me, ‘my grandmother or my grandfather used to bring me here and now I’m bringing my children,’” she shares. “One of my favorite parts about working here is seeing the people come back year after year.”
