Nags Head rental home booking tips and tricks:

Getting the most from your rental budget:

  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months along the coast of NC. Reserve your rental home in the Spring or Fall to get the benefit of warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowds.
  • The earlier you can book a rental home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable vacation rentals are booked early. Booking your rental property six to twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to search for and reserve your rental.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner or host whether your family qualifies for a price reduction.
  • Property managers usually offer guests an option to add vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which generally will cost you 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for additional information.
  • Often, management companies supply Nags Head area travel guide magazines which often include special deals, either offered independently by local companies, or through a partnership between the management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

How to select the best rental:

  • Choose a designated group leader, select your vacation week, and select a max budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group needs. Semi-Oceanfrt, Hot tub! Pets. Great ocn views! June 24th week 20% OFF! has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Nags Head vacation rental search.
  • Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed counts & types is almost always accessible on booking websites. If not, contact the property manager before reserving the rental. Remember that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds and bunks.
  • Are you looking for specific amenities? Most rental search websites include search filters with amenity lists. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before reserving a rental.
  • If your family is vacationing with pets, search for a pet-friendly property. Get specifics on breed, weight, and type requirements. Note that some property managers require additional pet deposits and fees.

Additional considerations:

  • Add the owner's information to your smartphone. Understand and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
  • During arrival, note any issues with the rental property and immediately alert the owner. Keep records of all coorespondence.
  • Property managers are there to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like loud visitors bothering your peace and quiet. Use the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and scenic spots you would've not otherwise known!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Lock your rental property while you're out! Don't let burglars ruin your vacation.
  • Re-check every room of the property to make sure that you've packed everything at departure. Re-check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Leave a review! Property owners rely on good reviews to compel more reservations. They'll be much obliged for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went awry, other families will will be grateful for your experience find their best rental home. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to solve it.

Ben Franklin

Stop by Nags Head's Ben Franklin at Mile Post 10 on the Bypass where you will find everything you need for the beach! From Clothing, T-shirts and Swimwear to Boards, Chairs, Umbrellas and Tackle. You'll find it all…and of course, we have the best selection of Souvenirs anywhere on the Outer Banks. Enjoy your vacation! Independently owned by a member of one of the Outer Banks’ oldest families, the Ben Franklin store is stocked with just about everything a visitor would need to go to the beach.

Ben Franklin stores were once part of a five-and-dime retail empire, with about 2,500 locations across the country in its heyday. As decades passed and the times and customers began to change, many closed their doors, leading to fewer than 150 of these nostalgic shops. Nags Head Ben Franklin, however, has withstood the test of time and adapted to the needs of its customers to provide a memorable shopping experience on the Outer Banks.

Debbie Terry Tolson, manager of the Ben Franklin location in Nags Head, recalls working with former owner Tommie Daniels. Daniels’ father, Moncie Daniels, started the business in downtown Manteo in the early 1900s. The Daniels family has been a longstanding fixture in the Outer Banks business community—Moncie even sold gas to the Wright brothers in 1903.

Tommie, with an excellent business mind, saw the opportunity the new Bypass presented and, in 1977, he opened the Nags Head location of Ben Franklin. He was one of the first businesses on the Bypass,” Tolson says.In addition to a new location, the Ben Franklin store saw a new group of customers.

“People would come from all around because Tommie had a little bit of everything—it was more like a five and 10 then,” Tolson explains. “As he went to the beach, he began to get more tourists, so he started catering more and more to visitors.”

Today, the 21,000-square-foot souvenir shop quickly catches the attention of anyone driving by thanks to the ocean-themed mural that decorates the façade of the building, painted by local artist Rob Snyder. This Ben Franklin location has become the must-stop shop for both first-time visitors to the area and generations of families who escape to the Outer Banks annually.

Tolson credits the great prices and friendly customer service to the success of the location, which keeps families returning.“People come in all the time and tell me, ‘my grandmother or my grandfather used to bring me here and now I’m bringing my children,’” she shares. “One of my favorite parts about working here is seeing the people come back year after year.”
