Tips and Tricks to get the perfect vacation rental experience:

Get the best rental home value:

  • Summer months are high season in Nags Head. To get the best value, try shifting your vacation dates to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and even October offer excellent temperatures, fewer crowds, and greatly reduced traffic.
  • In the Nags Head area, The earlier you can book, the easier your search will be. The best vacation homes are reserved early. Reserving your vacation home six - twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to plan and book your rental property.
  • Some property managers offer promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. Check with your property manager to see if special offers are available for your group.
  • Booking websites usually offer their guests an option to buy trip insurance. Trip insurance, which usually will cost you between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
  • Find a copy of your local Nags Head area magazine upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great articles, visitor guides contain discounts for nearby tours and attractions.

How to select the perfect rental in the Nags Head area:

  • Begin by selecting a vacation week and a budget.
  • Decide how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your family requires. Private Pool, Walk to Beach+Pier, Ocean View+Incredible Sunset has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
  • Precise information about bedrooms and bed counts & types is generally available on booking pages. If not, email the property management company before booking the property. Note that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
  • Is your group looking for specific amenities? Most rental websites include amenity lists and search filters. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are available before reserving a rental.
  • Some properties allow pets, but others don't. Allowable types of family pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional costs may apply. Ask the owner about allowable breeds and types before booking.

Have a great stay:

  • Be sure you get the property manager's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your rental home. Store the manager's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Upon arrival, record any damages to the property and immediately alert the property manager. Record all coorespondence.
  • Hosts are there to help! Don't be shy to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Be respectful. Often times, adjacent homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Locals can often help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to launch your kayaks, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Lock your rental while you are out and about. Keep your property safe!
  • When it's time to leave, complete a walk-through to make sure you didn't forget anything. Check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Inspect the rental a final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We advise walking through with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager is not available, remember to take video and pictures of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did you have a fantastic time? Most rental management companies make it easy for vacationers to provide feedback. If your property and/or property manager was great, they would love to hear it. If anything was out of order and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.

Most know The Cotton Gin as a must-stop shop for fine gifts, beachwear, souvenirs and so much more, but this retailer has a long-standing history within the Outer Banks. A local landmark that holds almost a century of memories, The Cotton Gin started from humble beginnings and continues to adapt to the times and tourists. Tommy Wright’s family has been in the Outer Banks for nearly 200 years. His great-great grandfather, Jacob Francis Wright, shipwrecked in Duck back in the early 1800s. Calling these barrier islands his new home, Wright and his family acclimated to their new environment.

Adaptation is a common theme for the Wright family. Tommy and his wife Candace, who continue to steer The Cotton Gin, have seen not only their business change with the times, but the Outer Banks as a vacation destination as well. A farm market in Jarvisburg eventually transformed and flourished into several retail locations dotting the Outer Banks.

“As the area changed and tourism took off in the 1960s, the family saw people coming for vacations, so they began to grow vegetables and things developed from there,” says Tommy Wright. The Wright family expanded upon the farm market and began to remodel a working cotton gin, later transforming the gin into The Cotton Gin general store in the late 1960s. While the additions to the farm store drew visitors, it was their encounters with the Wright family that kept people coming back year after year, which is something that remains true today.
