Nags Head rental home tips:

Money saving strategies:

  • In the Nags Head area, The earlier your group can reserve a vacation rental, the easier your search will be. The best rental properties are reserved very early. Booking your rental 6-12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and reserve your vacation rental.
  • To find the best rental within budget, we highly recommend reserving in Fall or Spring months. You'll benefit from lower rates, better selection, warm weather and the absence of giant crowds at Nags Head restaurants, tours, and activities. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Nags Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host if your family qualifies for a special rate.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer renters an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which generally will cost 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for specifics.
  • Many property management companies and vacation rental houses supply Nags Head area travel guides which often include money-saving offers, either offered independently by local businesses, or by way of a partnership between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

How to pick the perfect rental home in Nags Head:

  • To start, have your family choose trip dates and a budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration your family needs. Blankenship Cottage -- Pet Friendly with Sunroom and Just 2 blocks to beach has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Nags Head rentals search.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is commonly accessible on booking pages. If not, reach out to the property management company before reserving your rental. Remember that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds and bunks.
  • Are you bringing the family pet? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Ask your property manager before booking, and study your agreement! Additional pet fees or charges may be applied to your contract.
  • Visiting for a single event or attraction? If so, use a map search to find nearby properties.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before booking

Tips to have a wonderful stay:

  • Get the property manager's contact number and entry/exit procedures for your rental home. We recommend storing the host's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Hosts are there to help! Feel free to ask any questions during your stay.
  • Lock your rental while you are out and about. Protect your property!
  • Upon arrival, record any issues with the property and immediately alert the owner. Record all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable vacationers disrupting your life at home. Employ the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great local food and attractions you would have never otherwise known about!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Local residents can usually help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to spend a rainy day, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before departing, take a walk through the property to reconfirm you've collected all of your things. Make sure to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • After your trip, leave a review! Property managers rely on great reviews to compel future reservations. They'll be much obliged for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other families will will be grateful for your feedback and help them have the best future vacation. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to remedy it.

Don’t forget the gourmet market, or shop our beautiful linens for your bedroom and bath. We also feature coastal books and fine art, or just a whimsical fun gift to bring home to family and friends. Stop by soon and don’t forget to try our estate grown wines in our stores or visit our vineyard and winery, Sanctuary Vineyards, located adjacent to the original Cotton Gin in Jarvisburg.

Most know The Cotton Gin as a must-stop shop for fine gifts, beachwear, souvenirs and so much more, but this retailer has a long-standing history within the Outer Banks. A local landmark that holds almost a century of memories, The Cotton Gin started from humble beginnings and continues to adapt to the times and tourists. Tommy Wright’s family has been in the Outer Banks for nearly 200 years. His great-great grandfather, Jacob Francis Wright, shipwrecked in Duck back in the early 1800s. Calling these barrier islands his new home, Wright and his family acclimated to their new environment.

Adaptation is a common theme for the Wright family. Tommy and his wife Candace, who continue to steer The Cotton Gin, have seen not only their business change with the times, but the Outer Banks as a vacation destination as well. A farm market in Jarvisburg eventually transformed and flourished into several retail locations dotting the Outer Banks.

“As the area changed and tourism took off in the 1960s, the family saw people coming for vacations, so they began to grow vegetables and things developed from there,” says Tommy Wright. The Wright family expanded upon the farm market and began to remodel a working cotton gin, later transforming the gin into The Cotton Gin general store in the late 1960s. While the additions to the farm store drew visitors, it was their encounters with the Wright family that kept people coming back year after year, which is something that remains true today.
