Strategies to get the perfect vacation rental experience:

Sticking to a spending plan:

  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in coastal NC. To find the best value, shift your family's Nags Head vacation to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and even October offer great weather, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Nags Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
  • Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer rental homes during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Property management companies sometimes offer discounts for veterans. Ask your host or property manager if special discounts are available for your group.
  • Booking websites usually offer their guests an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which costs 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed trip time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for details.
  • Find a copy of your local Nags Head visitors guide magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitors guides have discounts for nearby accommodations, tours and attractions.

Use filters to search efficiently:

  • First, have your family agree to trip dates and a budget.
  • 295 ft from the beach
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is almost always available on booking pages. If not, call the property management company before booking the vacation home. Remember that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds. You will need to determine what is optimal for your family.
  • Visiting for a single attraction? Try a map search to browse nearby rentals.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before reserving a rental
  • If your group is vacationing with pets, you will need a property that allows animals. Get specifics on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Usually, property managers charge pet deposits and fees.

During your stay:

  • Store the owner's contact information in your smartphone.
  • To make sure that damages are not attributed to your family's stay, inspect for any problem areas during check in. Speak to the host right away to record your findings. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having a record of problems and contact attempts will be very helpful.
  • Hosts are available to help! Don't be shy to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Be respectful of your neighbors. Frequently, surrounding homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking policies is the right thing to do.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can usually help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to charter a fishing boat, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Keep the property locked while you are out! Don't let crooks spoil your vacation.
  • Double-check every room of the rental property to make sure that you've packed all of your family's items on check-out day. Re-check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Go through the rental one final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We recommend inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host is not available, remember to take pictures of the property to record its condition.
  • Did you have a great time? Many rental managers make it easy for clients to provide feedback. If your property and/or property management company was wonderful, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was defective and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
