Tips and Tricks for getting the best Nags Head vacation home experience:

How to get the best value:

  • Summertime is the most expensive season in Nags Head. To get the best value, consider changing your family's Nags Head vacation to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer great temperatures, , and reduced traffic. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Nags Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
  • Reserve your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules usually become available a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families reserve their Summer rental homes during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Some hosts offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. It's always a good idea to check with your property manager to see if discounts are available for your family.
  • Property managers usually offer guests an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for more information.
  • Many rental management companies and vacation rental houses supply Nags Head area visitor guide magazines which will include money-saving deals, either offered independently by local companies, or by way of a relationship between the management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

Selecting and booking the perfect Nags Head rental:

  • Choose a designated group leader, select your vacation week, and choose a max budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. Wise Choice: Semi-oceanfront, Private Pool, Spa has 6 bedrooms and 7 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rental home search.
  • Specific details about bedrooms and bed counts & types is regularly available on booking pages. If they are not listed, reach out to the property owner before reserving your rental. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds and bunks.
  • If there's a certain Nags Head destination you long to visit, browse properties that are either nearby, or those that cater to your desires.
  • Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are available before booking
  • Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Remember to ask your host before booking, and study your agreement! Additional pet fees or charges applied to your agreement.

More considerations:

  • Take a copy of the host's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your rental. Store the host's contact information in your smartphone.
  • During check-in, note any damages to the property and immediately alert the host. Record all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, stereo or thermostat. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief call prevents lots of difficulties.
  • Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Frequently, surrounding homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking regulations reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can usually help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Protect the owner (and your stuff!) by locking the rental while you are gone, just like you would at home.
  • Double-check every room of the vacation property to make sure that you've packed all of your family's items at departure. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Did you have a terrific vacation? Many rental management companies make it easy for guests to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or host was wonderful, they would love to hear about it. If anything was wrong and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
