Strategies for getting the perfect Nags Head vacation property experience:

Getting the most from your rental home budget:

  • The earlier your group can reserve a vacation rental, the easier your search will be. The best rental properties are reserved very early. Booking your vacation property six to twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to search for and reserve your vacation rental.
  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in Nags Head. Book your Nags Head rental property in Fall or Spring to enjoy warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August.
  • Owners sometimes offer rate reductions for veterans. Remember to ask your host or property manager if special offers are available for your family.
  • Booking websites frequently offer guests an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for more information.
  • Find a copy of your local Nags Head visitors guide magazine when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great information, travel guides have deals for nearby tours and attractions.

Finding the perfect rental in the Nags Head area:

  • Start by having your family select vacation dates and a maximum budget.
  • Note the number beds and what type of bedroom configuration you need. Terrapin Cottage: Oceanside with a private pool, ocean views, amazing sunrise &a has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Specific details about bedrooms and bed counts & types is almost always accessible on booking pages. Otherwise, email or call the host before you reserve the property. Remember that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You'll need to work out what configuration is optimal for your vacation family.
  • Some rental properties allow pets, and others don't. Acceptable types of pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional fees may apply. Ask the host about pet restrictions before booking.
  • Visiting for a single event? If so, use a map search to find nearby rentals.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before reserving a rental

Advice for a fantastic stay:

  • Review check in & check out procedures before leaving home. Take a printed copy, and save the instructions to your phone.
  • Hosts are great sources of help! Feel free to ask any questions during your stay.
  • Protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are out, just like you would at home.
  • To make sure that damages aren't linked to your stay, inspect the property for any problem areas during arrival. E-mail the rental manager right away to document your findings. If there is a dispute, having a record of problems and contact attempts will be useful.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious vacationers bothering your peace and quiet. Employ the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great local food and attractions you would have never otherwise known about!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the fresh catch of the day, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Double-check the rental property to make sure that you've packed all belongings at check-out. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the rental one final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the manager is not available, ensure that you take video and pictures of the property to record its condition.
  • After your trip, leave feedback! Property managers rely on excellent feedback to propel future reservations. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other vacationing families will will be grateful for your experience find their best vacation rental. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to solve it.

Don’t forget the gourmet market, or shop our beautiful linens for your bedroom and bath. We also feature coastal books and fine art, or just a whimsical fun gift to bring home to family and friends. Stop by soon and don’t forget to try our estate grown wines in our stores or visit our vineyard and winery, Sanctuary Vineyards, located adjacent to the original Cotton Gin in Jarvisburg.

Most know The Cotton Gin as a must-stop shop for fine gifts, beachwear, souvenirs and so much more, but this retailer has a long-standing history within the Outer Banks. A local landmark that holds almost a century of memories, The Cotton Gin started from humble beginnings and continues to adapt to the times and tourists. Tommy Wright’s family has been in the Outer Banks for nearly 200 years. His great-great grandfather, Jacob Francis Wright, shipwrecked in Duck back in the early 1800s. Calling these barrier islands his new home, Wright and his family acclimated to their new environment.

Adaptation is a common theme for the Wright family. Tommy and his wife Candace, who continue to steer The Cotton Gin, have seen not only their business change with the times, but the Outer Banks as a vacation destination as well. A farm market in Jarvisburg eventually transformed and flourished into several retail locations dotting the Outer Banks.

“As the area changed and tourism took off in the 1960s, the family saw people coming for vacations, so they began to grow vegetables and things developed from there,” says Tommy Wright. The Wright family expanded upon the farm market and began to remodel a working cotton gin, later transforming the gin into The Cotton Gin general store in the late 1960s. While the additions to the farm store drew visitors, it was their encounters with the Wright family that kept people coming back year after year, which is something that remains true today.
