Our top Vacation rental home tips and tricks:
Sticking to a budget:
- Book your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families book their Summer rental homes during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- To find the largest vacation home within budget, we recommend booking in the Spring or Fall. You'll benefit from lower rates, greater selection, warm weather and the absence of giant crowds at the beach and popular Nags Head attractions. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer months.
- Some owners offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Check with your host or property manager to see if rate reductions are available for your family.
- Property management companies often offer customers an option to obtain vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for specifics.
- Often, rental management companies supply Nags Head area visitor guide magazines which include coupons, either offered directly by local companies, or by way of a relationship with the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Nags Head visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.
Filter your search:
- Start by choosing trip dates and a spending budget.
- Determine how many beds and the configuration your family needs. Oceanside - short walk to beach has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Nags Head rentals search.
- Specific details about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is almost always available on booking websites. Otherwise, contact the property manager before you book your rental. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds and bunks. You'll need to determine which bed configuration is right for your group.
- Are you bringing the family pet? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Ask your host before booking, and study your rental agreement! Pet fees or costs may be applied to your invoice.
- Are you looking for special amenities? Most websites include amenity lists and search filters. Use these filters to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before reserving a rental.
Know before you go:
- Add the host's contact information to your smartphone. Print and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- Hosts are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask any questions during your stay.
- Lock your rental home while you are away. Protect the owner's property and your things!
- Note any damages to the property upon arrival, and immediately send them to the host. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are useful if damages are attributed to your stay.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like unpleasant visitors bothering your peaceful home. Apply the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great beaches and scenic spots you would have never otherwise known!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can frequently point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Double-check every room of the property to confirm that you've packed all of your family's items at departure. Check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Inspect the property a final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We recommend inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host isn't available, ensure that you take video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Did you have a great vacation? Most rental home management companies make it easy for vacationers to provide feedback. If your rental and/or property management company was fantastic, they would love to hear about it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
