Our top Nags Head rental booking tips:

How to get the best value:

  • June, July, and August are high season in Nags Head. Reserve your rental property in the Spring or Fall to enjoy warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Nags Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
  • The earlier your group can book a vacation rental, the easier your search will be. The most desirable properties are reserved very early. Reserving your rental home six - twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to plan and book your vacation rental.
  • Some hosts and property managers offer special rates for veterans. Ask your host or property manager if discounts are available for your family.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer renters an option to obtain vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for specifics.
  • Find a copy of your local Nags Head area magazine when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitor guides contain deals for nearby attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.

Narrow your Search:

  • To start, have your family commit to a vacation week and a spending budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration you need. Ocean View Home with private pool and Hot tub has 7 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
  • Specific details about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is often available online. Otherwise, call the property owner before reserving the vacation home. Remember that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds and bunks.
  • If there's an individual Nags Head beach you long to visit, browse homes that are either close by, or those that cater to your needs.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before booking
  • If your group is traveling with pets, you must book a pet-friendly rental. Get information on breed, weight, and type requirements. Note that some property owners require additional pet deposits and fees.

Know before you go:

  • Be sure you get the owner's contact number and entry/exit procedures for your . Put the host's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Document any damages to the property upon arrival, and immediately contact the property manager. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be useful if there is a dispute.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, stereo or washer/dryer. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent a lot of difficulties.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious vacationers bothering your peaceful home. Practice the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and attractions you would have not otherwise known!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Local residents can frequently help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to spend a rainy day, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Lock your rental home while you are out. Protect the owner's property and your things!
  • On check-out day, complete a walk-through to make sure you have not leave anything behind. Re-check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the property one final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever you can. If the host isn't available, ensure that you take video and pictures of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did you have a great stay? Many rental management companies make it easy for clients to provide reviews. If your rental and/or property management company was great, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was imperfect and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.

Stop by soon and don’t forget to try our estate grown wines in our stores or visit our vineyard and winery, Sanctuary Vineyards, located adjacent to the original Cotton Gin in Jarvisburg.

Most know The Cotton Gin as a must-stop shop for fine gifts, beachwear, souvenirs and so much more, but this retailer has a long-standing history within the Outer Banks. A local landmark that holds almost a century of memories, The Cotton Gin started from humble beginnings and continues to adapt to the times and tourists. Tommy Wright’s family has been in the Outer Banks for nearly 200 years. His great-great grandfather, Jacob Francis Wright, shipwrecked in Duck back in the early 1800s. Calling these barrier islands his new home, Wright and his family acclimated to their new environment.

Adaptation is a common theme for the Wright family. Tommy and his wife Candace, who continue to steer The Cotton Gin, have seen not only their business change with the times, but the Outer Banks as a vacation destination as well. A farm market in Jarvisburg eventually transformed and flourished into several retail locations dotting the Outer Banks.

“As the area changed and tourism took off in the 1960s, the family saw people coming for vacations, so they began to grow vegetables and things developed from there,” says Tommy Wright. The Wright family expanded upon the farm market and began to remodel a working cotton gin, later transforming the gin into The Cotton Gin general store in the late 1960s. While the additions to the farm store drew visitors, it was their encounters with the Wright family that kept people coming back year after year, which is something that remains true today.
