Rental booking tips and tricks:

How to get the best rental home value:

  • Book your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families book their Summer vacation rentals during Winter holiday get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summer time is high season in the Nags Head area. To get the best value, change your vacation dates to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic.
  • Some owners offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Check with your property manager to see if special offers are available for your group.
  • Property management companies typically offer customers an option to purchase vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which usually will cost you between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed days as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for details.
  • Look for your local Nags Head area magazine upon checking in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local articles, visitor guides contain coupons for nearby attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.

How to select the best vacation rental in the Nags Head area:

  • Select a group lead, select your dates, and select a budget.
  • Decide how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration you need. Frank Wood Cottage c. 1923-Historic, oceanfront, spacious decks and great views! has 7 bedrooms and 7 bathrooms.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is almost always available online. If you don't see them listed, email the property owner before you book the vacation home. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which frequently includes pull out couches in living rooms. You will need to determine what configuration is best for your vacation family.
  • Remember to include your furry companions! Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your rental agreement! Additional fees or might be applied to your invoice.
  • Does your family require specific amenities? Most rental search websites include amenity lists and search filters. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find the best rental home.
  • Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. .

Additional considerations:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before traveling. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the directions to your smartphone.
  • Property managers are there to help! Don't be shy to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Lock your rental while you're out. Protect the owner's property and your things!
  • Note any issues with the rental during check in, and immediately contact the property manager. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are beneficial if a dispute is filed.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious visitors bothering your peace. Apply the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great local food and attractions you would have not otherwise known about!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, walk through the property to confirm you've collected all personal belongings. Make sure to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Did your family have a wonderful stay? Most rental management companies make it easy for travelers to provide feedback. If your property and/or property management company was fantastic, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was inoperable and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
