Rental home tips:

How to get the best rental value:

  • The earlier you can reserve a vacation rental, the better your selection will be. The most desirable rental properties are booked early. Reserving your rental home up to twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to plan and reserve your vacation home.
  • Summer is high season in Nags Head. To get the best value, try shifting your group's vacation week to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and even October offer warm temperatures, , and greatly reduced traffic.
  • Some hosts and property managers offer special rates for veterans and active duty military. Remember to ask your host or property manager if discounts are available for your group before you book.
  • Property managers often offer guests an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed time as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for specifics.
  • Many management companies supply Nags Head area travel guide magazines which will include coupons, either offered directly by local businesses, or through a relationship with the management company and the business itself. You can also find Nags Head area magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

Choosing the perfect vacation rental:

  • Select dates and max budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. Kimberly's Kottage: Oceanside, Private Pool has 5 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Nags Head vacation rental search.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is almost always available on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, call the property owner before you reserve the vacation property. Note that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
  • Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Remember to ask your host before booking, and study your agreement! Pet fees or charges might be applied to your invoice.
  • Does your family require particular amenities? Most rental search websites include amenity lists and search filters. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before booking

Considerations for your stay:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before traveling. Save the instructions to your smartphone, and take a printed backup.
  • Hosts are there to help! Don't be shy to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Keep the property locked while you're gone! Don't let burglars ruin your trip.
  • Upon arrival, note any issues with the rental property and immediately contact the host. Keep records of all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
  • Respect your neighbors. Often, adjacent homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can frequently help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to charter a fishing boat, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Re-check every room of the property to confirm that you've packed all belongings at check-out. Remember to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Did your family have a fantastic vacation? Many rental websites make it easy for travelers to provide reviews. If your rental and/or property manager was great, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was defective and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
