Tips and Tricks to get the very best Nags Head vacation home experience:

Cost saving strategies:

  • The earlier your group can book, the better your selection will be. The most desirable rental properties are reserved very early. Booking your vacation home up to twelve months before your travel dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and book your vacation rental.
  • June, July, and August are high season in Nags Head. To get the largest rental home within your budget, we suggest booking in Fall or Spring months. You'll enjoy lower rates, better selection, warm weather and the absence of giant crowds at your favorite restaurants and activities.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner or host whether your group qualifies for a special rate.
  • Property managers typically offer guests an option to add vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed vacation time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for additional information.
  • Find a copy of your local Nags Head area magazine upon arrival. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local articles, visitor guides have deals for nearby attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.

Planning, selecting, and booking the right Nags Head rental:

  • Choose vacation dates and max budget.
  • Moongate
  • Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed counts is usually available on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, call the property manager before booking your rental. Remember that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You will need to work out what configuration is best for your vacation.
  • If your family is traveling with pets, search for a pet-friendly vacation rental. Request information on breed, size, and type requirements. Usually, property managers charge additional pet fees.
  • Are you visiting for a single attraction or event? Try a map search to browse nearby rentals.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are included before reserving a rental

Additional considerations:

  • Take a copy of the property manager's contact number and check in/check out procedures for your rental property.
  • Property managers are great sources of help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
  • Lock your rental property while you're away! Don't let thieves ruin your vacation.
  • To make sure no damages are linked to your family's visit, make note of any problem areas upon your arrival. Call the property manager immediately to relay any pre-existing damages. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having a record of issues and contact attempts will be helpful.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like loud visitors disrupting your peace and quiet. Use the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great beaches and places you would have not otherwise known about!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can frequently help. Who better to ask where to get the best seafood, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • On check-out day, take a final walk-through to confirm you did not forget anything. Check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Walk through the rental a final time and scan for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can. If the manager isn't available, take photographs of the rental to record its condition.
  • Leave a review! Property owners rely on great reviews to drive future reservations. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other vacationing families will will be grateful for your review and help them have the best future vacation. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to remedy it.

Visitors are treated to a unique shopping experience in our main store in Jarvisburg, as well as our beach stores in Corolla, Duck, and Nags Head. Explore room after room filled with décor for your home and coastal fashions for both men and women. Don’t forget the gourmet market, or shop our beautiful linens for your bedroom and bath. We also feature coastal books and fine art, or just a whimsical fun gift to bring home to family and friends. Stop by soon and don’t forget to try our estate grown wines in our stores or visit our vineyard and winery, Sanctuary Vineyards, located adjacent to the original Cotton Gin in Jarvisburg.

Most know The Cotton Gin as a must-stop shop for fine gifts, beachwear, souvenirs and so much more, but this retailer has a long-standing history within the Outer Banks. A local landmark that holds almost a century of memories, The Cotton Gin started from humble beginnings and continues to adapt to the times and tourists. Tommy Wright’s family has been in the Outer Banks for nearly 200 years. His great-great grandfather, Jacob Francis Wright, shipwrecked in Duck back in the early 1800s. Calling these barrier islands his new home, Wright and his family acclimated to their new environment.

Adaptation is a common theme for the Wright family. Tommy and his wife Candace, who continue to steer The Cotton Gin, have seen not only their business change with the times, but the Outer Banks as a vacation destination as well. A farm market in Jarvisburg eventually transformed and flourished into several retail locations dotting the Outer Banks.

“As the area changed and tourism took off in the 1960s, the family saw people coming for vacations, so they began to grow vegetables and things developed from there,” says Tommy Wright. The Wright family expanded upon the farm market and began to remodel a working cotton gin, later transforming the gin into The Cotton Gin general store in the late 1960s. While the additions to the farm store drew visitors, it was their encounters with the Wright family that kept people coming back year after year, which is something that remains true today.
