Tricks and tips for getting the perfect vacation home experience:

How to get the best rental value:

  • To get the best value, consider changing your trip dates to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and even October offer excellent weather, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during June, July, and August.
  • Book your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacations during Winter holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager if your group qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer guests an option to buy trip insurance. Trip insurance, which generally will cost 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
  • Many rental management companies and vacation rental houses supply Nags Head area travel guides which will include special offers, either offered directly by local businesses, or by way of a relationship between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Nags Head visitors guide and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

Planning and picking the rightvacation home:

  • Start by choosing your the best vacation week and a budget.
  • Note the number beds and the bed configuration your family requires. Always Chill: Hot Tub, Pool Access, Golf Discounts has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
  • Specific details about bedrooms and bed counts is almost always accessible online. If you don't see them listed, email the property owner before you reserve your rental. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds. You'll need to determine what is optimal for your group.
  • Are you visiting for a single event or attraction? Try a map search to find nearby rentals.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Make certain to ask about wheel chair entry, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
  • If your family is bringing pets, you must reserve a pet-friendly property. Make sure to ask for details on breed, size, and type restrictions. Often, property owners charge additional pet fees.

More tips for your visit:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before traveling. Take a printed copy, and save the instructions to your smartphone.
  • Note any issues with the rental at check in, and immediately e-mail them to the owner. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that can be helpful if damages are assessed.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, stereo or appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief phone call can prevent a lot of concerns.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like loud visitors disrupting your peaceful home. Practice the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and places you would've never otherwise known!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Residents can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to see a beautiful sunrise or sunset, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Ensure you protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home while you are gone, just like you would back home.
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, walk through the property to make sure you've collected all of your things. Check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the rental one final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host is not available, remember to take video of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did you have a fantastic vacation? Many rental home management companies make it easy for customers to provide comments. If your rental and/or property manager was wonderful, they would love to hear it. If anything was inoperable and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.

Don’t forget the gourmet market, or shop our beautiful linens for your bedroom and bath. We also feature coastal books and fine art, or just a whimsical fun gift to bring home to family and friends. Stop by soon and don’t forget to try our estate grown wines in our stores or visit our vineyard and winery, Sanctuary Vineyards, located adjacent to the original Cotton Gin in Jarvisburg.

Most know The Cotton Gin as a must-stop shop for fine gifts, beachwear, souvenirs and so much more, but this retailer has a long-standing history within the Outer Banks. A local landmark that holds almost a century of memories, The Cotton Gin started from humble beginnings and continues to adapt to the times and tourists. Tommy Wright’s family has been in the Outer Banks for nearly 200 years. His great-great grandfather, Jacob Francis Wright, shipwrecked in Duck back in the early 1800s. Calling these barrier islands his new home, Wright and his family acclimated to their new environment.

Adaptation is a common theme for the Wright family. Tommy and his wife Candace, who continue to steer The Cotton Gin, have seen not only their business change with the times, but the Outer Banks as a vacation destination as well. A farm market in Jarvisburg eventually transformed and flourished into several retail locations dotting the Outer Banks.

“As the area changed and tourism took off in the 1960s, the family saw people coming for vacations, so they began to grow vegetables and things developed from there,” says Tommy Wright. The Wright family expanded upon the farm market and began to remodel a working cotton gin, later transforming the gin into The Cotton Gin general store in the late 1960s. While the additions to the farm store drew visitors, it was their encounters with the Wright family that kept people coming back year after year, which is something that remains true today.
