Tips and Tricks for getting the perfect vacation property experience:

How to get the best rental value:

  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in the Nags Head area. To find the best rental home within budget, we suggest reserving in the Fall or Spring. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, better selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of large crowds at restaurants, beaches, and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Nags Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
  • Reserve your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer rental homes during Winter holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Some property management companies offer discounts for veterans. Check with your property manager to see if special offers are available for your group before you book.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners often offer guests an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for more information.
  • Find a copy of your local visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great information, travel guides contain money saving offers on nearby accommodations, restaurants and tours.

Use filters to narrow your search:

  • First and foremost, have your family choose vacation dates and a spending budget.
  • Note the number beds and the bed configuration your family needs. Soundbreeze Sunset: Golf and sound views, hot tub, dog friendly, elevator. has 6 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Nags Head rentals search.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is often accessible on booking pages. If they are not listed, email the host before reserving the rental. Note that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
  • Are you looking for particular amenities? Most rental search websites include search filters for amenities. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental
  • If your group is vacationing with pets, you'll need to book a pet-friendly property. Ask for details on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Some property owners require additional pet deposits and fees.

More considerations:

  • Get the owner's contact number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental. Store the manager's contact information in your smartphone.
  • To make sure damages aren't linked to your family's visit, make a record of any problem areas during check in. Make contact with the rental manager immediately to relay any damages. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having the recorded issues and contact attempts will be useful.
  • Hosts are great sources of help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
  • Be respectful of your neighbors. Frequently, nearby homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking rules reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can frequently help. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Lock your rental while you are out and about. Keep your property safe!
  • At departure, take a final walk-through to make sure you haven't forget any personal items. Check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Leave a review! Hosts rely on great reviews to stimulate more bookings. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other vacationing families will appreciate that you share your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to fix it.
