Tips to get the best vacation property experience:

Get the best rental home value:

  • Summer is high season in the Nags Head area. To get the best value, change your group's vacation week to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and October offer warm temperatures, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer months.
  • In the Nags Head area, The earlier your group can book a vacation home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable vacation rentals are booked early. Reserving your vacation rental six - twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to plan and book your vacation home.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host if your family qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
  • Property managers often offer renters an option to obtain trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which usually costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for more information.
  • Many rental management companies and vacation rental houses supply Nags Head area visitor guide magazines that include special offers, either offered directly by local companies, or by way of a relationship with the management company and the business itself. You can also find Nags Head visitors guide and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

Make a plan and pick your prefect Nags Head rental:

  • Select vacation week and spending budget.
  • Note the number beds and the bed configuration you need. 6205 Markel * 4 Min Walk to the Beach has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Precise details about bedrooms and bed counts & types is usually accessible online. If not, call the property manager before you reserve the vacation property. Remember that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches. You will need to determine what bed configuration is right for your vacation.
  • Looking for particular amenities? Most websites include search filters with amenity lists. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find the best rental.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. .
  • Do your family pets travel with you? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement! Additional pet fees or costs might be applied to your agreement.

More considerations for your visit:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Take a printed copy, and save the directions to your phone.
  • To make sure that no damages are linked to your family's stay, make a record of any problem areas when you arrive. Get in touch with the rental manager immediately to document any damages. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having the recorded issues and contact attempts will be valuable.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, stereo or thermostat. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief call prevents lots of issues.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like unpleasant vacationers bothering your life at home. Practice the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and attractions you would've never otherwise known!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Local residents can usually help. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Lock your rental property while you're out! Don't let crooks ruin your family vacation.
  • Re-check every room of the vacation property to confirm that you've packed all of your belongings on check-out day. Re-check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the property one final time and scan for any damage. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host is not available, remember to take photos of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • After your trip, leave feedback! Property owners rely on excellent reviews to stimulate new bookings. They'll be thankful for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other families will will be grateful for your feedback and help them have the best future vacation. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to remedy it.

Stop by soon and don’t forget to try our estate grown wines in our stores or visit our vineyard and winery, Sanctuary Vineyards, located adjacent to the original Cotton Gin in Jarvisburg.

Most know The Cotton Gin as a must-stop shop for fine gifts, beachwear, souvenirs and so much more, but this retailer has a long-standing history within the Outer Banks. A local landmark that holds almost a century of memories, The Cotton Gin started from humble beginnings and continues to adapt to the times and tourists. Tommy Wright’s family has been in the Outer Banks for nearly 200 years. His great-great grandfather, Jacob Francis Wright, shipwrecked in Duck back in the early 1800s. Calling these barrier islands his new home, Wright and his family acclimated to their new environment.

Adaptation is a common theme for the Wright family. Tommy and his wife Candace, who continue to steer The Cotton Gin, have seen not only their business change with the times, but the Outer Banks as a vacation destination as well. A farm market in Jarvisburg eventually transformed and flourished into several retail locations dotting the Outer Banks.

“As the area changed and tourism took off in the 1960s, the family saw people coming for vacations, so they began to grow vegetables and things developed from there,” says Tommy Wright. The Wright family expanded upon the farm market and began to remodel a working cotton gin, later transforming the gin into The Cotton Gin general store in the late 1960s. While the additions to the farm store drew visitors, it was their encounters with the Wright family that kept people coming back year after year, which is something that remains true today.
