Brew Thru

No trip to the Outer Banks is complete without cruising through Brew Thru, the Outer Banks’ original drive thru convenience store. Whether you’re looking for a refreshing cold beverage of Coke, Pepsi and other soft drinks on the go, stocking up your cooler with refreshments to enjoy at the beach or piling up on beer and wine for a party, Brew Thru is a fun and unique experience all vacationers need to see for themselves. Drive-Through Beer & Gear Brew Thru is Your One-Stop Shop at the Beach The year was 1977, and Dana and Becky Lawrentz were chatting with friends over brews in their hometown of Akron, Ohio. They got to talking about a gas station convenience store in the area that had built a makeshift drive-through. Everyone agreed it would be pretty great if you could actually drive through a convenience store and pick up everything you needed without getting out of the car. But what would you call a place like that? Well, you’d call it a Brew Thru. It was an idea they couldn’t shake, so the Lawrentzes moved to the Outer Banks and built the first Brew Thru with the help of a partner. The idea was that people could come buy everything they would need for their trip to the beach—beer, wine, soft drinks, snacks, ice—without getting out of the car. That same year, a t-shirt salesman visiting the store and talked them into adding t-shirts to their product line—and 44 years later there are now more than five million Brew Thru t-shirts out in the wild. The Lawrentzes’ daughter Brandy and her husband Philip Foreman purchased the business from them in 2002, and they now operate five locations across the Outer Banks.“We love being the one-stop shop for folks on the way to their beach house,” Foreman says. “Our car tenders are the friendliest people at the beach. We’re here to greet you, get you everything you need for your trip, load it up in the trunk for you, and have you leaving with a smile on your face.” The store is quite expansive, featuring more than 100 brands of beer, dozens of wines and even a vast selection of cigars—not to mention all the snacks, t-shirts and other gear. To make ordering a little easier, customers in line get a menu—fondly known as the Summer-y—that outlines everything available at the store. These Summer-ies are also available in many of the beach rentals, which allows vacationers to decide what they want before driving through. For customers who would like to get out and stretch their legs, there’s the Brew Thru Shop in Kill Devil Hills, where you can find their world famous t-shirts and other gifts. New t-shirt designs are created each year, making a yearly Brew Thru t-shirt a favorite of locals and annual visitors to the Outer Banks. The Foremans both grew up in the Outer Banks, and they love that Brandy’s parents’ vision for a friendly and convenient place for people to grab their brews and other beach stay essentials is continuing to flourish. “Our family has been welcoming people to the Outer Banks since 1977,” Foreman says. “We love this beautiful place, and we want everybody to get to enjoy it.”

Walk-ins are welcome, if a customer doesn’t mind the wait between loyal customers. Services offered include waxing, ear piercing, styling, perms, cuts, color, and highlights. Whenever you need a break from the beach, Cloud Nine is a great place for some creative renewal. This very cool shop was established here in 1988, and its since been a favorite for locals and visitors looking for unique creations from Outer Banks and regional artisans -- pottery, paintings, jewelry -- but especially to indulge one’s own creative yearnings by making earrings or a necklace, or who knows? There’s a vast selection -- the largest on the beach -- of the prettiest beads of all sizes and colors, including authentic trade and vintage beads, gorgeous seaglass and other jewelry-making supplies to choose from to fashion say, an ankle bracelet or headband. And if you don't know how to start, owner Ginnie Flowers and her staff offer weekly classes and workshops, specializing in seaglass wire wrapping and beading. Along with sharing her talents and supporting over 50 local artists and designers, Ginnie gives back to the community in a number of other ways. She contributes to Dare County’s Arts Council, Animal Rescue, Surfrider Foundation and, to encourage children's literacy, she started a "Read for Beads" program. You'll not want to miss Ginnie's treasure of a shop, tucked away near a corner in Pirate's Quay Shopping Center, just south of the YMCA. What better way to spend the day but by making something beautiful to wear or give as a gift? Cloud Nine offers the best kind of Outer Banks souvenir: one crafted with your own hands.

Unlike most businesses on the Outer Banks, the summertime is the quiet time at this tanning salon, meaning you’re more likely not to have to wait for one of the five tanning beds. But even if you just need to touch up your tan before hitting the beach, you’ll find what you need here.  The medium low-pressure “super bed” offers a 15-minute session for those gals or guys who haven’t tanned in a while, and the medium high-pressure 12-minute session (and most popular) is great for those with a “base” who want the quickest and tannest tan.  Sessions can be purchased individually or in packages. There are also at least 40 tanning lotions in stock,  ranging from the most fabulous and expensive, like Designer Skin Black, to mid-range, like Party at the Mansion, to the more affordable, like Super Black. The salon also sells wonderful skin moisturizers and exceptional outdoor tanners and spray-on tan. Twilight Teeth are also available for purchase to whiten your teeth while you’re tanning. In addition to tanning products, the salon sells purses, jewelry, sunglasses and designer jeans.

The slogan of this casual women's clothing store says it all: "Where everything is fun, sassy & chic!". Every inch of this brightly colored store is filled with fashionable, must-have shoes, clothing, and accessories ---sunglasses, earrings, necklaces, rings, hats, and purses --- for a woman looking for the latest trends in fashion. The store, located at the Shoppes at 10.5, off the Bypass at Milepost 10.5, had been opened for three years in Kill Devil Hills before owner Betsy Buchanan moved it to the current Nags Head location.

Here’s a place you can’t help feeling happy visiting. Founded in 1994 by brothers Bert and John Jacobs, Life is Good is centered around products featuring a simple drawing of a character, Jake, and his contagious smile.  As the company took off nationally, the drawings have expanded to depictions on products of other charming characters, including a very cute dog. Under the umbrella of  Kitty Hawk Kites, which is located next door, the store features T-shirts, coffee mugs, beach supplies and hats with wry sayings and irresistible cartoon drawings to fit numerous activities and topics,  as long as they’re upbeat.  The T-shirts are high quality and exceptionally soft. Don’t forget the dog or the baby --- there’s some irresistible items for little canines and tiny humans. A bonus: The store, located at Milepost 13 off the Bypass,is right across from Jockey’s Ridge State Park, the tallest natural sand dune system on the East Coast. If you get there at dusk, you’ll pretty much be guaranteed to see an eye-popping sunset right out the front door.  But any time of the day will be a worthy trip to this fun shop. Also look for Life is Good products at Duck and Rodanthe locations.

Opened in 2002, shortly before the Outer Banks’ first annual Bike Week, the Nags Head Harley-Davidson sells just about everything a hog rider would want except the motorcycle. The shop gives a nod to local outlaws with two life-sized pirate mannequins --- one an alluring woman buccaneer, of course --- who greet customers as they enter. The store is decorated with big Harley banners and decorative signs that are for sale, and is filled with a great collection of Harley T-shirts for men, women and children. In addition to a selection of bike gear, there’s key rings, collectible stuffed toys, baby items, hats, sandals, jewelry, hoodies and sunglasses. And the shop owner hasn’t forgot the store’s resort location: There’s also Harley golf balls and hats and beach towels in stock.

Outlets Nags Head is the home to 20 designer fashion brands, unique boutiques and eateries.  Save up to 70% off regular retail prices at our outlet stores while you enjoy a great shopping experience.

Locally owned and operated, Rock-A-Bye Baby boasts that it is the only full service kids store on the Outer Banks. This store may look small from the outside, but don’t let appearances fool you. It is stuffed to the gills with charming, irresistible baby, toddler’s and young children’s brand-name clothing, toys and gear, from birth to size 7. Owner Cindy Floyd, who has been in children’s retail for more than 31 years, clearly knows her product lines. From merchandise for pregnant women and fun gifts for baby showers, to christening and baptism gifts and preemie and newborn items --- bedding, diaper bags, rattles --- to bowls, silverware, furniture, baby jewelry, baby slings, and of course, kiddie OBX T-shirts --- you can find it all here, both new and like-new. Need a pop-up beach cabana to keep Elmo out of the sun?  It’s here! There’s also a great selection of first birthday party items, and furniture and gear are available to rent.

Themed on recycled and repurposed materials, Seagreen Gallery is one of the newest and most innovative art establishments on the Outer Banks.  This is a great place to find a one-of-a-kind gift for someone who has everything.

Since its opening in 1961, Seaside Art Gallery has steadily expanded from one room into an impressive 12 rooms, filled with selections representing an eclectic range of artists, eras and mediums --- even masters like Rembrandt and James M. Whistler.  Owned by the same family at the same location, the gallery is like an art museum that just keeps going and going, except nearly everything in it is for sale. The business is a reflection of more than 75 years of collecting that started with original owners Barbara and Chester Smith, and is lovingly continued by their daughter, Melanie Smith.  Most rooms at Seaside feature themes, like seascapes and local scenes;  Western and Native American art; modern art; antique pottery and vintage art;  and Oriental art. An entire room is dedicated to a huge selection of estate jewelry, and another to a collection of original Audubon art.  A miniature art show --- featuring work no larger than 40-inches square or ,for sculptures, 6 inches ----held annually at the gallery since June 1992 has gained international acclaim. Another show held in February since 2007 “Animals in Art” donates 10 percent of the sale of any animal-related work to the local animal shelter. Artist demonstration shows, lasting anywhere from a day to a week, are also held throughout the year. The owner is also a certified art appraiser.

An authentic Outer Banks treasure, this shell shop is one of the oldest family-owned stores in Nags Head, and it is without a doubt one of the most interesting.  Opened in 1954 by Woodrow Stetson, a Coast Guardsman, and his wife Lucretia, the building burned down in 1965 and was rebuilt at the same location where it is today --- and is still operated by the same family. Visiting Shipwreck, located off the Nags Head-Manteo causeway, is like going to an art museum because the shells are like works of art. Imported from exotic locales all over the world including the Philippines, Tahiti, Australia, Indonesia and Thailand, all the shells are real.Check out the stunning (and valuable) Chamber Nautilus and the half Nautilus. Only Mother Ocean could create such a beauty. The store is worth a stop just to see the variety of spectacular shells that wash up on the world’s beaches (some of them, like Conch shells and Sand Dollars, can be found off the Outer Banks).  The shells are displayed neatly on shelves, so you can pick them up and look closely before making a choice of what to buy. There is also a good selection of coral, which has become exceedingly rare and won’t be available for long. (Sea horses no longer are, the owner said.) The three large rooms are stuffed with fascinating sea-related items, including driftwood art; seashell mirrors, lamps, wind chimes and curtains;  shark’s teeth and fish décor. In the back room, there’s an old bathtub filled with small shells for sale by the cupful. There is also a selection of fossils and rocks for sale, right near the massive whale jawbone hanging from the ceiling.

There’s a lot more than “fishy” things at this store, which is much bigger than it looks from the road.  With island music getting customers in the mood as soon as they step inside, the store evokes the layed-back tropical vibe and makes you want to crawl into a hammock and soak up the sun. The store is nearly bursting with colorful merchandise, literally filling every possible space from floor to ceiling. It features hand-crafted jewelry, art and furniture, much of it created by local artisans.  How about some cool silver balls to hang from your ceiling? Or a sun wall ornament ---- offered in a range of sizes and prices? There are also island-themed T-shirts, dresses and sandals for sale. Suffice it to say that everything in this interesting store is beach-y, but with a bit more of a Caribbean or Pacific island edge. There is also a complete selection of Happy Birthday books and greeting cards. And of course there’s plenty of fun fish décor.

Since 1975, Surfside Casuals has been selling a vast selection of bathing suits and beach accessories for men, women, girls and boys. And if there’s one truism about the Outer Banks, it’s that no one stays in business unless they’re doing it right.  Surfside, locally owned and operated by the same owner since day one, knows their inventory, and they happily help customers with fitting and other details about selecting the right suit for their needs. Sizes offered include juniors, women’s 4-24W and girl's 4-16. Not only are there thousands of swimsuits to choose from --- long torso, bra sizes, separates, bikinis, men’s board shorts --- there are also cover-ups, dresses, footwear, beach jewelry, hats, sunglasses, and rash guards. There’s the usual tourist souvenirs sold here --- shell wreaths, OBX glasses and cups, for instance --- but mostly it’s a great place to find the perfect swimsuit at a time-honored Outer Banks establishment

This  recently opened chain discount store was welcomed by many Outer Bankers, who appreciate a good deal and quality merchandise. Located on the border of Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills, its central Outer Banks location makes T.J. Maxx a popular destination for locals and visitors looking to save a little money on a designer item.  Prices range from rock-bottom to merely affordable, but the inventory is always changing, so part of the fun is unearthing surprises. Shoppers can find everything from sexy lingerie to business suits and sportswear for women, to surf wear and jeans and dress pants for men. There’s also plenty of kids’ clothes, swimwear, home décor, beauty and cosmetic items and jewelry to browse. It’s just kind of fun to come in and see what T.J. Maxx has to offer week to week.

The shop manager likes to describe this cool store as “the most fun place on the beach.” That might be pushing it, but it’s definitely one of those stores that make you smile and want to take something home. It’s got everything from classic women’s clothing to cutting edge trendy garb, for “teeny-bopper to grandmother,” and from tip to toe ---literally. There’s shapewear, dresses, blouses, pants, skirts and shoes and sandals. And there are all the embellishments and accessories---belts, scarves, purses, jewelry, hats --- all unique and stylish. Plus, there’s lots of playful and colorful housewares and beach-y décor --- mirrors, lamps, shell decorations, art, candles, picture frames. There are even troll beads and charms in stock. Funny cards and plaques sold throughout the store would make an amusing gift or souvenir.

The quintessential tourist store, Wings is stocked floor to ceiling with beach-related clothing and nearly every other possible  beach-y item imaginable. With store locations from Corolla to Hatteras Island, this is the place visitors depend on to get low-priced Outer Banks T-shirts and souvenirs. Locals are not as prone to shop here, but it’s not unusual to see a resident run in to buy some sand toys or a beach chair. In addition to boogie boards and bathing suits, there’s flip-flops, umbrellas, sun dresses, beach balls, OBX items, sun hats, costume jewelry, sunscreen, lighters, magnets, key chains . . .  the list goes on. The stores are a little gaudy, and the merchandise is not known for its high quality, but whatever you purchase will at least get you through your vacation without your wallet taking too much of a hit.
