No trip to the Outer Banks is complete without cruising through Brew Thru, the Outer Banks’ original drive thru convenience store. Whether you’re looking for a refreshing cold beverage of Coke, Pepsi and other soft drinks on the go, stocking up your cooler with refreshments to enjoy at the beach or piling up on beer and wine for a party, Brew Thru is a fun and unique experience all vacationers need to see for themselves. Drive-Through Beer & Gear Brew Thru is Your One-Stop Shop at the Beach The year was 1977, and Dana and Becky Lawrentz were chatting with friends over brews in their hometown of Akron, Ohio. They got to talking about a gas station convenience store in the area that had built a makeshift drive-through. Everyone agreed it would be pretty great if you could actually drive through a convenience store and pick up everything you needed without getting out of the car. But what would you call a place like that? Well, you’d call it a Brew Thru. It was an idea they couldn’t shake, so the Lawrentzes moved to the Outer Banks and built the first Brew Thru with the help of a partner. The idea was that people could come buy everything they would need for their trip to the beach—beer, wine, soft drinks, snacks, ice—without getting out of the car. That same year, a t-shirt salesman visiting the store and talked them into adding t-shirts to their product line—and 44 years later there are now more than five million Brew Thru t-shirts out in the wild. The Lawrentzes’ daughter Brandy and her husband Philip Foreman purchased the business from them in 2002, and they now operate five locations across the Outer Banks.“We love being the one-stop shop for folks on the way to their beach house,” Foreman says. “Our car tenders are the friendliest people at the beach. We’re here to greet you, get you everything you need for your trip, load it up in the trunk for you, and have you leaving with a smile on your face.” The store is quite expansive, featuring more than 100 brands of beer, dozens of wines and even a vast selection of cigars—not to mention all the snacks, t-shirts and other gear. To make ordering a little easier, customers in line get a menu—fondly known as the Summer-y—that outlines everything available at the store. These Summer-ies are also available in many of the beach rentals, which allows vacationers to decide what they want before driving through. For customers who would like to get out and stretch their legs, there’s the Brew Thru Shop in Kill Devil Hills, where you can find their world famous t-shirts and other gifts. New t-shirt designs are created each year, making a yearly Brew Thru t-shirt a favorite of locals and annual visitors to the Outer Banks. The Foremans both grew up in the Outer Banks, and they love that Brandy’s parents’ vision for a friendly and convenient place for people to grab their brews and other beach stay essentials is continuing to flourish. “Our family has been welcoming people to the Outer Banks since 1977,” Foreman says. “We love this beautiful place, and we want everybody to get to enjoy it.”

When you ask locals in the Nags Head area where to get local seafood, they’ll almost certainly recommend Austin’s, not only because the market has been in business since 1960, but also because it sells only “fresh from the net” fish at great prices. Owned by a native fishing family, the market is the real deal, not some fancy store that happens to sell fish. An excellent selection of fresh seasonal fish and shellfish is available to choose from ---- depending on the time of year ---- including shrimp, clams, sea scallops, red snapper, swordfish, rockfish, mahi-mahi, grouper, tuna and flounder. There’s even a lobster tank to pick from for a fresh lobster meal. An extensive take-out menu offers entire seafood meals of steamed or fried fish with sides of macaroni and cheese, hush puppies, cole slaw and potato salad. Soup, sandwiches, beer and wine are also available. Seafood is inspected regularly by the Health Department and the FDA.
This small convenience store in the heart of Nags Head has become a bit of a local landmark all its own, thanks to its unforgettable name and its coveted merchandise, as well as its selection of great breakfast and deli fare. Biscuits N' Porn may not be a traditional stop on an Outer Banks vacation, but it lures in locals and tourists alike with its distinctive moniker, and its daily helping of homemade biscuits and other tasty grub which is easy to enjoy on the go.
A friendly staff and small town atmosphere makes this well-equipped grocery store a pleasure to shop at, and many visitors come regularly on their annual vacation. Situated on the oceanfront next to Jennette’s Pier, this local family-owned market has been in business for more than 50 years. This is a great place to pick up fresh-made sandwiches, snacks and salads for a picnic lunch at the beach, or on your way to go fishing all day at Oregon Inlet. Cold drinks, beer and good selection of wine and quality meat are also available here, as well as gourmet cheeses and fixings. There’s even fresh local produce for sale. You can also purchase bait and tackle, and pick up a nice beach souvenir at the gift shop.
This no-nonsense fish house is the real Outer Banks deal, selling the freshest local-caught shell fish available. Situated on the southern tip of Nags Head, the little gray building stands on the edge of Roanoke Sound with a beautiful view of Manteo. This business has been in the same native family since 1957, and came close to having to shut down in 2011 from damages during Hurricane Irene. But the owners repaired the water damage and repainted the modest retail section a bright blue. Like its name implies, fresh Outer Banks crab meat, picked by Daniels’ own crabbers, is for sale here. Crab, male and female, can also be purchased by the dozen or the bushel, in jumbo lump meat or claws. Steamed crab is also available, as well as fresh local shrimp and clams. Soft shell crabs, also known as peelers, are available in-season in the early summer. Even snow crab from northern waters is available here, purchased from a Wanchese fish dealer.

When you go to the beach, you have to have saltwater taffy. That’s where Forbes Candies comes in. With roots in Virginia Beach going back to 1930, this family-owned business expanded to the Outer Banks in the 1960s, and there are now four locations here with a wide variety of every kind of sweet for your sweetheart, your kids or yourself. But of course the specialty is saltwater taffy in a vast selection of flavors. Then there’s gourmet fudge, made with all kinds of nuts and chocolate flavors. And the Virginia peanut brittle is still made with the same authentic recipe the Forbes used in their first store in Virginia Beach. There are other beachy delicacies like brown sugar and vanilla seafoam. YUM! The stores also have an interesting souvenir selection, and the Rodanthe store, which opens at 7 a.m. in the summer, also serves coffee and tea.
Seafood fans will find all the seasonal Outer Banks catches of the day at this Nags Head market that offers daily fresh seafood and so much more. Greentail’s Seafood Market and Kitchen is a catch-all for an easy lunch or dinner on-site or on the go, thanks to its fresh fish and other coastal fare, its casual market with a variety of accompaniments, and its creative menu that propels Outer Banks seafood to the next level.
The finest imported cigars and specialty tobacco are featured products at this upscale store. An impressive selection of hand-blown glass pipes in every size, design and color is also available. Many of the pipes are crafted by Outer Banks and regional artisans, and none are imported from China. Entire walls, shelves and numerous glass cases showcase different pipes that look like works of art in their own right. Of course, there are handsome wooden carved pipes for sale, too. The store also stocks high-quality smoking accessories, like refillable lighters, atmospheric artworks, men’s gift items and out-of-the ordinary T-shirts. Three different package deals on beautiful wooden humidors are offered for weddings or parties. Each deal includes a choice of fine cigars and appropriate accessories to enhance their enjoyment.

This modest deli and convenience store at Milepost 10 off the U.S. 158 Bypass is not just any Citgo gas station stop. As the sign in the window boasts, it’s the “Best Lunch Deli on the Beach,” and many locals would agree. Their biscuits are renowned for their taste and texture, and the fried chicken is the way Southern fried chicken is supposed to be. Food is freshly made every morning and afternoon, and the selection offers basic homestyle favorites. Breakfast offerings include sausage, bacon, pork, ham and of course, eggs. Renovated in 2012, this spacious seafood market just off the Bypass sells local caught seafood and its own homemade sauces. Owned by a branch of Daniels, an old Outer Banks family of fishermen, the operators know where to find the freshest fish in season. They also have fresh frozen seafood available off-season, including northern Snow Crabs and Outer Banks shrimp. But in the summer, you’ll find fresh sea scallops, live blue crabs and lots of fresh finfish, like yellow fin tuna, flounder, and mahi-mahi. Crabs and shrimp can be steamed. The market also makes its own spicy cocktail sauce and special salsa. If you’re lucky, you’ll happen to come on a day when there’s some homemade key lime pie available. The store also sells potatoes, corn and white onions, and all the fixings needed to make fish tacos, as well as spices and breading.
