Island Dancer: Cozy Oceanfront bungalow that is dog friendly, has a walkway to the beach and is located in the Historic Loop of Nags Head.

Bed Sizes: 2 Queens, 2 Twin, 1 Sleep Couch

Island Dancer is a historic, comfortable bungalow and will be the ideal home for your hideaway to the OBX. Constructed in 1935 this cozy bungalow has survived more than eighty years along the coast of the Outer Banks. Families came to the Outer Banks in the 1900s in the summer to escape the heat of the inland farms and to savor the sea and ocean air for a healthier living. Many of these historical homes still have family ties to the original owners. Families spent the day at the beach and casual on their covered decks in the evening sharing stories with family, friends, and neighbors. These homes added modern amenities as the years went by but the laid-back lifestyle is still possible to appreciate. Island Dancer is your answer to the ideal place to relax and rejuvenate from the fast-paced life we live in. Bring your favorite books and games and hang out on the covered decks.

Relive the memories of years gone by and make your new traditions and memories with the family, friends, and your doggies. Island Dancer has all the modern conveniences you need whether you are preparing your favorite meals, watching movies, or ending your day in a comfortable bed getting ready for the next day's adventures.

Exploring the Outer Banks: You'll want to check out the local restaurant directly across the street, Tortuga's Lie for some delicious meals. The OBX has so much to see and do, so plan some days to try more of our local eateries, unique stores, historical sites, and outdoor adventures.

Beach Access: A private walkway behind the home leads you to the handsome beaches and ocean where you can spend the day basking in the sun, swimming, surfing, and maybe find some sea glass to take home.

No Smoking/Vaping. Pet Friendly-Dogs Only. (2-Modest Dogs or 1 Sizable Dog) Dogs allowed for an additional fee.

How to find the best Nags Head vacation rental experience:

Money saving strategies:

  • June, July, and August are high season in the Nags Head area. To get the best value, shift your group's vacation to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer warmer temperatures, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August.
  • The sooner your group can book a rental home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable vacation homes are reserved early. Reserving your vacation property six to twelve months before your travel dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and reserve your vacation rental.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host if your vacationing group qualifies for a special rate.
  • Property managers frequently offer customers an option to obtain vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which usually will cost you between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for more information.
  • Look for your local Nags Head area magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, travel guides contain coupons for nearby accommodations, restaurants and tours.

Use filters to search efficiently:

  • Start by choosing the best vacation week and a max budget.
  • Decide how many beds and the configuration your family requires. Oceanfront, dog friendly, walkway to beach, cozy historic cottage- Island Dancer has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Nags Head vacation rental search.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is normally accessible on booking pages. Otherwise, call the property management company before reserving your rental. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
  • Are you visiting for a single event or attraction? If so, use a map search to find nearby rentals.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for persons with a disability. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
  • If your group is traveling with pets, you'll need to book a pet-friendly vacation rental. Request information on breed, weight, and type requirements. Often, property managers charge pet deposits and fees.

Additional considerations:

  • Get the owner's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental.
  • To ensure that damages are not linked to your stay, make a record of any problem areas during check in. Speak to the host right away to document any issues. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having the recorded concerns and contact attempts will be very helpful.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, intercom or washer/dryer. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents quite a few problems.
  • Be a good neighbor. Often, surrounding homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking policies reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can often help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to order the best nachos, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Lock your rental home while you're out and about. Protect the owner's property and your things!
  • Double-check every room of the rental property to make sure that you've packed all personal items on check-out day. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Did your family have a terrific vacation? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for customers to provide comments. If your rental and/or host was terrific, they would love to hear it. If anything was out of order and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.

Ben Franklin

Stop by Nags Head's Ben Franklin at Mile Post 10 on the Bypass where you will find everything you need for the beach! From Clothing, T-shirts and Swimwear to Boards, Chairs, Umbrellas and Tackle. You'll find it all…and of course, we have the best selection of Souvenirs anywhere on the Outer Banks. Enjoy your vacation! Independently owned by a member of one of the Outer Banks’ oldest families, the Ben Franklin store is stocked with just about everything a visitor would need to go to the beach.

Ben Franklin stores were once part of a five-and-dime retail empire, with about 2,500 locations across the country in its heyday. As decades passed and the times and customers began to change, many closed their doors, leading to fewer than 150 of these nostalgic shops. Nags Head Ben Franklin, however, has withstood the test of time and adapted to the needs of its customers to provide a memorable shopping experience on the Outer Banks.

Debbie Terry Tolson, manager of the Ben Franklin location in Nags Head, recalls working with former owner Tommie Daniels. Daniels’ father, Moncie Daniels, started the business in downtown Manteo in the early 1900s. The Daniels family has been a longstanding fixture in the Outer Banks business community—Moncie even sold gas to the Wright brothers in 1903.

Tommie, with an excellent business mind, saw the opportunity the new Bypass presented and, in 1977, he opened the Nags Head location of Ben Franklin. He was one of the first businesses on the Bypass,” Tolson says.In addition to a new location, the Ben Franklin store saw a new group of customers.

“People would come from all around because Tommie had a little bit of everything—it was more like a five and 10 then,” Tolson explains. “As he went to the beach, he began to get more tourists, so he started catering more and more to visitors.”

Today, the 21,000-square-foot souvenir shop quickly catches the attention of anyone driving by thanks to the ocean-themed mural that decorates the façade of the building, painted by local artist Rob Snyder. This Ben Franklin location has become the must-stop shop for both first-time visitors to the area and generations of families who escape to the Outer Banks annually.

Tolson credits the great prices and friendly customer service to the success of the location, which keeps families returning.“People come in all the time and tell me, ‘my grandmother or my grandfather used to bring me here and now I’m bringing my children,’” she shares. “One of my favorite parts about working here is seeing the people come back year after year.”
