Finding the best Nags Head vacation property experience:

Cost saving strategies:

  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months along the coast of NC. To find the most suitable vacation home for your budget, we highly recommend reserving in Fall or Spring months. You'll benefit from lower rates, greater selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of giant crowds at Nags Head restaurants, beaches, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Nags Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
  • The earlier you can book, the easier your search will be. The best vacation rentals are booked early. Booking your vacation home up to twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to search for and reserve your rental home.
  • Some hosts and property managers offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. Remember to ask your property manager if special offers are available for your group.
  • Property managers usually offer their guests an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which costs 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for specifics.
  • Often, management companies and vacation rental houses supply Nags Head area visitor guide magazines which will include coupons, either offered directly by local businesses, or by way of a relationship between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Nags Head visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

Planning and choosing the rightrental:

  • Start by having your group decide on the best dates and a budget.
  • Private Pool, Hot Tub
  • Precise information about bedrooms and bed counts & types is generally accessible on booking websites. If not, reach out to the host before you book the rental. Note that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds.
  • Does your family require unique amenities? Most websites include amenity lists and search filters.
  • Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are available before booking
  • If your family is vacationing with pets, you'll need to book a pet-friendly vacation rental. Request details on breed, size, and type restrictions. Usually, hosts charge additional pet fees.

During your stay:

  • Add the host's phone number to your phone. Understand and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
  • Record any issues with the property upon arrival, and immediately e-mail them to the owner. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that can be helpful if a dispute is filed.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, elevator or WIFI setup. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief telephone call prevents a lot of issues.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious visitors disrupting your home life. Employ the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great beaches and scenic spots you would've not otherwise known!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can typically help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to see a beautiful sunrise or sunset, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for BBQ?
  • Lock your rental property while you are away! Don't let thieves spoil your trip.
  • Just prior to departing, take a final walk-through to make sure you have not forget any personal items. Remember to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the property one final time and look for any damage. We recommend walking through with the property manager whenever you can. If the host is not available, remember to take photographs of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Remember to leave feedback! Property managers rely on great feedback to propel new bookings. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other families will appreciate that you share your feedback and help them have the best future vacation. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to fix it.

Don’t forget the gourmet market, or shop our beautiful linens for your bedroom and bath. We also feature coastal books and fine art, or just a whimsical fun gift to bring home to family and friends. Stop by soon and don’t forget to try our estate grown wines in our stores or visit our vineyard and winery, Sanctuary Vineyards, located adjacent to the original Cotton Gin in Jarvisburg.

Most know The Cotton Gin as a must-stop shop for fine gifts, beachwear, souvenirs and so much more, but this retailer has a long-standing history within the Outer Banks. A local landmark that holds almost a century of memories, The Cotton Gin started from humble beginnings and continues to adapt to the times and tourists. Tommy Wright’s family has been in the Outer Banks for nearly 200 years. His great-great grandfather, Jacob Francis Wright, shipwrecked in Duck back in the early 1800s. Calling these barrier islands his new home, Wright and his family acclimated to their new environment.

Adaptation is a common theme for the Wright family. Tommy and his wife Candace, who continue to steer The Cotton Gin, have seen not only their business change with the times, but the Outer Banks as a vacation destination as well. A farm market in Jarvisburg eventually transformed and flourished into several retail locations dotting the Outer Banks.

“As the area changed and tourism took off in the 1960s, the family saw people coming for vacations, so they began to grow vegetables and things developed from there,” says Tommy Wright. The Wright family expanded upon the farm market and began to remodel a working cotton gin, later transforming the gin into The Cotton Gin general store in the late 1960s. While the additions to the farm store drew visitors, it was their encounters with the Wright family that kept people coming back year after year, which is something that remains true today.
