Strategies to get the very best vacation home experience:

When to book & When to go:

  • Book your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually open twelve months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacation rentals during holiday gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summer is high season in the Nags Head area. To find the best value, change your family's Nags Head vacation dates to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer great temperatures, , and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the high season.
  • Hosts sometimes offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. Ask your property manager if rate reductions are available for your group.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners often offer guests an option to obtain vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
  • Often, property management companies supply Nags Head area visitor guide magazines which often include special offers, either offered independently by local companies, or through a relationship between the management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

Finding the perfect vacation rental:

  • Begin by choosing a vacation week and a spending budget.
  • Note the number beds and the configuration your group requires. Anchor's Away: Hot Tub, Rec Room, Fenced Backyard has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is normally available on booking pages. Otherwise, email or call the property owner before you book the home. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds in living rooms. You'll need to establish what configuration is optimal for your vacation family.
  • Some rental properties allow pets, but some do not. Allowable types of family pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added costs may apply. Ask your host about pet restrictions before booking.
  • Are you visiting for a single attraction? Use a map search to browse nearby properties.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before booking.

More considerations:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Take a printed copy, and save the directions to your phone.
  • Hosts are available to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are out, just like you would back home.
  • Make a record of any issues with the rental at check in, and immediately send them to the host. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that are beneficial if a dispute arises.
  • Respecting quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. You'll increase your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are often a great resource to find the best local beaches and hangouts.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Local residents can usually help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, walk through the rental to reconfirm you've collected everything. Remember to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the rental a final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager is not available, ensure that you take pictures of the rental to record its condition.
  • Did you have a wonderful time? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for clients to provide comments. If your rental and/or host was great, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was imperfect and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
