Tips to get the perfect Nags Head vacation home experience:

Get the best rental value:

  • The sooner you can book a rental home, the easier your search will be. The best vacation homes are reserved early. Reserving your vacation rental up to 12 months before your vacation is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to plan and reserve your rental.
  • Booking in Spring or Fall is our favorite way to save money on your rental home. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of acceptable homes. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Nags Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective host if your group qualifies for a price reduction.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer their guests an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed vacation time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
  • Look for your local Nags Head area magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitors guide magazines contain coupons for nearby tours and attractions.

Use filters to narrow your rental search:

  • Select a group lead, choose your trip dates, and select a maximum budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration your family requires. A Wave From It All: 3 Bedroom Oceanfront Condo w\/ Access to Beach & Community P has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our search.
  • Precise details about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is often available online. Otherwise, call the property owner before reserving the vacation property. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds and bunks.
  • Some rentals allow pets, and others don't. Allowable types of dog or cat, size and breeds may be restricted, and added charges may apply. Ask the owner about your furry family members before booking.
  • Are you visiting for a single event? If so, use a map search to locate nearby rentals.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. .

Tips for a wonderful stay:

  • Review check in & check out procedures before traveling. Add a note with the directions to your smartphone, and take a printed copy.
  • Property managers are available to help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
  • Lock your rental property while you're out! Don't let thieves ruin your family vacation.
  • To ensure that no damages are attributed to your family's visit, make a record of any problem areas during arrival. Contact the host immediately to record any damages. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having a record of issues and contact attempts will be helpful.
  • Be a good neighbor. Often, adjacent homes are filled by local residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can often help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to get the best seafood, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • At departure, complete a final walk-through to confirm you have not forget anything. Check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the property one final time and keep an eye out for damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager is not available, ensure that you take photos of the rental to record its condition.
  • Did your family have a fantastic time? Many rental websites make it easy for customers to provide comments. If your rental property and/or host was fantastic, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was out of order and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.

Ben Franklin

Stop by Nags Head's Ben Franklin at Mile Post 10 on the Bypass where you will find everything you need for the beach! From Clothing, T-shirts and Swimwear to Boards, Chairs, Umbrellas and Tackle. You'll find it all…and of course, we have the best selection of Souvenirs anywhere on the Outer Banks. Enjoy your vacation! Independently owned by a member of one of the Outer Banks’ oldest families, the Ben Franklin store is stocked with just about everything a visitor would need to go to the beach.

Ben Franklin stores were once part of a five-and-dime retail empire, with about 2,500 locations across the country in its heyday. As decades passed and the times and customers began to change, many closed their doors, leading to fewer than 150 of these nostalgic shops. Nags Head Ben Franklin, however, has withstood the test of time and adapted to the needs of its customers to provide a memorable shopping experience on the Outer Banks.

Debbie Terry Tolson, manager of the Ben Franklin location in Nags Head, recalls working with former owner Tommie Daniels. Daniels’ father, Moncie Daniels, started the business in downtown Manteo in the early 1900s. The Daniels family has been a longstanding fixture in the Outer Banks business community—Moncie even sold gas to the Wright brothers in 1903.

Tommie, with an excellent business mind, saw the opportunity the new Bypass presented and, in 1977, he opened the Nags Head location of Ben Franklin. He was one of the first businesses on the Bypass,” Tolson says.In addition to a new location, the Ben Franklin store saw a new group of customers.

“People would come from all around because Tommie had a little bit of everything—it was more like a five and 10 then,” Tolson explains. “As he went to the beach, he began to get more tourists, so he started catering more and more to visitors.”

Today, the 21,000-square-foot souvenir shop quickly catches the attention of anyone driving by thanks to the ocean-themed mural that decorates the façade of the building, painted by local artist Rob Snyder. This Ben Franklin location has become the must-stop shop for both first-time visitors to the area and generations of families who escape to the Outer Banks annually.

Tolson credits the great prices and friendly customer service to the success of the location, which keeps families returning.“People come in all the time and tell me, ‘my grandmother or my grandfather used to bring me here and now I’m bringing my children,’” she shares. “One of my favorite parts about working here is seeing the people come back year after year.”
